Friday the 13th certainly wasn't a good day for Teyo Johnson.
The Calgary Stampeders fullback is recovering after being stabbed at a Tiesto show at Calgary's Big Four Building on the Stampede Grounds early Friday morning.
Johnson told the Calgary Sun the altercation occurred when "some guys got hyped up" and wanted to fight him. According to CTV News, the fight involved "five or six people."
"It wasn't because they knew who I was or anything, it was just an unfortunate accident," the 27-year-old CFL player told the Calgary Sun.
"I didn't back down from these guys when they wanted to fight me. I didn't throw the first punch, so I didn't instigate it. It was just some guys felt like they could be tough and take advantage of me and unfortunately I got stabbed in the back. I count my blessings I'm still here."
The newspaper also reports the altercation left Johnson with one of his assailant's teeth embedded in his hand.
CBC News reports police were already on the scene when the fight started. They arrested one person, who was later released and is not a suspect, and removed a knife from the scene.
Johnson spent the night in hospital where he was treated for the stab wounds and had the tooth removed from his hand.
"If the cops are looking for a guy getting his teeth fixed, that might help," Johnson told the Calgary Sun.
Johnson has since been released from hospital and was removed from the Stampeders' active roster, according to the Calgary Sun. The newspaper reports he didn't play in Calgary's game against the Edmonton Eskimos on Sunday, but was seen with his team-mates at their walk-through on Saturday morning. It is not known when Johnson will return to the lineup.
The Stampeders are due to face the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Sunday (Nov. 22) in the CFL Western Division finals. If they win that match, they'll head to the Grey Cup against either the Montreal Alouettes or BC Lions, who both also play Sunday in the Eastern Division finals.
