So has anyone here moved from using 6 inch monitors to 8 inch, would like to hear your thoughts on the difference you experienced
Basically ive got some Mackie HR624 monitors and i dont think they put out enough low end for me personally.
Ive got my room treated recently and thought about getting a sub but the thoughts of trying to position it and set up crossovers etc just seems like too much hassle
I was thinking of going up to the 824, but hearing some good stuff on this forum about those Yamaha HS80M ??
any thoughts? |

Having listened to your Soundcloud page i'd say that you were probably doing alright on the Mackies. The mixes are very good.
Perhaps you're perceiving less bass becuase of the treatment?
Those 624s are 6.7 inch cones aren't they? |

I'm thinking about doing the same thing. 5 inches just isn't enough for my bottom end.

I can't decide if I want to do that, or just add a sub, myself. |

thanks for the kind comment!
Not sure actually, just assumed they were 6", maybe they are bigger than i thought
Thing is, im switching my MOTU output to my Hifi for doing the low end of my tracks - when i mix the low end on the hifi then it seems to translate better to other sound sources that i test on.
Id like to be able to do ALL the mixing on my monitors as i know that hifis are usually made to sound better than they actually are...

As i said above, i did think about going down the sub route but it could be more hassle than its worth... |

no point your mixes sound fine on soundcloud
sub is more for personal enjoyment than mixing anyway (unless you set it up for mid or far field monitoring ) |

i think the biggest thing i noticed when i went from an 8" to a 6" was i made SURE to have front bass ports. having rear bass ports on larger speakers makes it impossible without a big, acoustically treated room to know where anything in the low end is going. i prefer to have less boomy bass speakers, i make much better decisions for sound selection etc.
i say stick with the smaller speakers, i'm really happy with mine |

The sub issue has been done to death on here and unless you are going to design and treat your room in the first place and have a fully calibrated system, then there's no point.
Furthermore, I am of the opinion that a sub should not be used for stereo mixing - people somehow forget we are making music in streo, not 2.1 (where you have a discreet LFE channel).
Oh, and for those of you that say "but my uber expensive hifi has a sub" - you need to relaise that there is no standardisation of sub crossovers in the hifi market apart from THX (good luck ;) ) so you'll never be able to mix accurately for sub inclusive systems anyway.
You're mixes are good, but I get the feeling you're struggling and possibly could do it faster and with less hassle with monitors that have better bass response right?
I liked the HR624's (good detail) but found them to lack bass extension.
Then you have a few options:
Yamaha HS80's - yes, I know there'e probably cheaper that the 624's but go listen to them....
Dynaudio BM12's - Lovely but not cheap.
Quested VS2108 - great, not prefect, but great, however lotsa $$$
and the Mackie HR824's - TBH, if you love the 624's the HR 824 (mk1) would be a good choice - you can pick them (mk1) used for around $500 which is a bargain and you won't take long to adjust to them.
Focal twins are the best out there right now and if you can afford them you'll never look back, but they are not cheap. |

I'd save up for focals/genelecs/dynaudios/K&H rather than getting sub par monitors. You'll be better off with them IMO. |

How about the Event Opals? They have an 8-inch woofer and 2 front ports. |

I agree with DJ RANN, subs are for producing. There are so many legitimate and undeniable reasons why subs are a bad choice, it's really just not worth considering unless you're doing surround mixing.
If I was going to drop serious money on monitors, I would skip 8" entirely, unless they are Even Opals - probably the only 8" monitors worth getting at the high end. Beyond this, you should look into 2.5-way or 3-way monitors. |

Thanks for the advice everyone
RANN, youve probably hit the nail on the head - i mean i can survive on the 624s but we all like to make music without struggling doing stuff we dont want to right??? It just distracts from the main goal!
To be honest, my room is never gonna be good enough for Focals etc, ill leave those for professionally designed and treated studios
The reason i would like the 824 is because im thinking they will sound similar to the 624 (apart from the low end), but i could be very wrong here
Will check out the other recommendations in the thread, thanks |
