EDM by City

Thought it'd be cool to compile some info on what cities are big for EDM across the world. I'm sure a lot of you have travelled and been to many places that offered really cool scenes in specific styles of music.
This might be something that's obvious for some, but there's bound to be a few places people hadn't known about before and it'd make travel planning easier.
Namely what cities are must sees for what types of EDM, what clubs to go to, which cities are best for picking up rare and hard to find records, etc.
The reason I'm asking is I'm looking at doing an exchange next year, and while Berlin would have been absolutely ideal for me my school doesn't offer any exchanges there. I figured there had to be some places on the list that had great scenes but I simply wasn't aware of it. It'd certainly be nice to immerse myself into a city where I'd be able to learn a lot both culturally and musically. |

if you go to berlin, try your best not to look and act like an american...because at panorama/berghain , tresor, watergate, bar 25, maria am ostbanhof...and more they will refuse you entry if they think that you are british or american.
the few obvious others would be to me at least.
do demf at least once....especially old miami (in a really bad part of town and looks like a casse croutte) on sunday, monday.
wmc, poser ville.
if you haven't done mutek here, do it.
sonar festival in barcelona (have not done it yet myself but it is on my to do list)
Amore fest in rome on new years (i'm biased, best new years party that i have ever done.)
don't go to South Korea, but if you do Club Answer is pretty cool with good bookings. I stopped hating steve lawler because of this club. It is the most expensive place in the world that i have been though. (20$ rum an cokes).
In japan you have Unit and Womb.
Womb might be the best club in the world, and trust me...you will feel like you are on a different planet because asians party way different than us. |

Really? That's pretty disappointing. Is that an attitude that's pretty prevalent in all of Germany or just those clubs?
'Cause I wouldn't mind checking out Cocoon Club in Frankfurt either if I'm in the neighbourhood.
Any tips on not acting american? I'd just talk to them in French I guess, feels like my safest bet.
Also Tokyo is definitely currently on the top of my list in terms of destinations. I've never heard of Unit but really wanted to check out Womb. Any one kind of music that's bigger than another down there? |

i will also add for berlin: if you like house music and are not afraid of transvestites look for raumklang club.
really tiny undergroud squatter place with an amazing soundsystem. |

they just book big and even the residents are really good. the sound and vibe are bar none. (talking womb here..unit is smaller but books techno)
Just make a few German friends. British and American tourists are cocks. The head bouncer at berghain/panorama (you can't miss him he has tattoos on his face) will only speak to you in german. If you can answer or have friends that can you should be fine. Berghain can be scary because of what happens in the corners (lots of gay stuff)...but you will hear the best music in the world.
The women that go there don't dress like whores...but...;)
Cocoon is cool but i didn't go on a sven night. Frankfurt sucks...i know haki will disagree but it is a hole. |

birmingham - q club
went to see luciano vs loco dice gig there. the place is an ex-methodist hall (so, a church, ing awesome venue). prolly wouldn't go back there as birmingham is a hole though (i was sure i was gonna get mugged)
london - matter
3-level, 2600 persons club in the o2 arena, only worth checking out if they book someone cool (sven vath NYE heeeeeeeeello) since its a bit out of the way and doesnt really have anything special in terms of lights, sound, etc.
oh yeah, bars are open the whole night :gsmile:
can't wait to check out fabric in london, should be good times |

for the UK, if youre after techno, the monthly 'Detatched' in Leeds dwarfs all the above hands down bookingwise. http://detatched.co.uk/
if in berlin check out club transmediale festivale as well, a little more on the artsy idm side but very good! |

I'd definitely recommend Tokyo. I probably partied harder there than in Berlin heh...

There's also:
Module is the size of my apartment but is wicked for meeting locals who know their stuff... I ran into Akiko Kiyama, Fumiya Tanaka and a cute girl who was DJ'ing on the 4th floor of Womb 2 weeks later and hooked me up bigtime (discounto-listo ftw) :p
Liquidroom / Liquid loft have some nice bookings once in a while.
Ageha has a ridiculous looking sound system and is huge... never been though. Oh, and they book Yoji alot... |
