The problem I have with the USA is that this country is extremely Puritan and has draconian laws when it comes to sex/nudity, alcohol, and lifestyles -- even though it's supposed to be the 'Land of the Free.'
For instance, you'll get arrested for drinking beer on the street; pornography is strictly prohibited in many states, and adultery is a crime in some of them; many people here are ultra-religious (esp. in the Bible Belt) and will not tolerate anything. There is never any nudity shown on TV here; this is strictly forbidden and people get really angry! And then there's Pres. Bush's infamous "drug war..." |
Yeah, I see those fundamentalist USA christians on tv all the time. Drinking in the streets is illegal here too, although I haven't heard any stories of anyone getting arrested, but its illegal to be drunk and running around. (bartender told us that when our friend was face down puking on the sidewalk)
As for nudity, we have soft-core porn on tv after 11. :D Death by violent crime is very low compared to the states. I remember a police officer telling us that in school. Also, I've lived in the Jane & finch area (supposedly bad neighbourhood) and I live and go to school downtown 8 months of the year, haven't run into a problem yet. I guess if you're not looking for trouble, chances are you'll be fine. Although my gf had her car stolen off her driveway once, in scarborough, aka scarberia, aka scarlem.
My uncle who moved to the Bronx a few years ago, got jumped by 3 guys on his way home from work, after being only a few months in the country. Being in the vietnamese army and recently released from jail, he beat the guys up and ran home. I visited his apartment where he has a family of 3 children. GHETTO, my dorm room at university is better lol. He moved to LA a few years ago tho... dunno how they're doing. That was my 2 weeks in the Bronx. Really opened up my eyes to Inner-City America. |

I know that this is alittle off from what the original question was but I've always been wanting to ask someone this:
In Canada, is there target ranges that you can go to where they will let unlicenced ppl like me shoot a real gun?
Don't get me wrong, I don't plan to go and kill someone, I just wanna try shooting a gun, it's an experience just like skydiving or horseback riding.
My friend who had to do security training actually got to shoot a pistol.
I know for a fact in the US, ppl can go to gun ranges and use shotguns for target practice pretty easily....

There are shooting ranges in Canada, though not nearly as many as there are in the States. My friends lives in Alliston Ontario, north of Bolton, and their opening a Skee shooting range near his place. There are also gun clubs. You are alowed to buy handguns provided you have the Restricted FAC (Fire Arms Control) License. My friend just got his, but wont buy a gun, cause to buy a gun, you have to be a member of a gun club (a handgun that is), and memberships cost.
For what I know, you dont need your FAC to go to a gun club.
I like canada much more than the states because it is more relaxed. One thing that always makes me laugh is watching a movie on TNT (turners network in Atlanta). They will have a violent movie on TV, not cut out any scenes with murders, or killings, but mute out, or dub all the swearing. As if to say, its ok to watch ppl kill eachother, as long as they dont swear while doing it. Kinda backwards to me. |
