One shots

| I was wondering on how people use them correctly. My songs sound a little boring and people have suggested I use one shots to add some spice. But after experimenting with some one shots they seem to just not "fit" into the song and sound awkward. So how do people here go about using them, and if they have some decent sample packs please share. |

| I just randomly place them until they sound good. Hard panning left/right works really well too. When you've made a decent pattern, switch out some of the hits for similar but different oneshots for variety. |

EQ reverb delay chrous lfo any one or a combination thereof.

| Yea, reverb/delay etc. are the easy parts. I'm talking about the sounds themselves, The vengeance ones that I have just sound so wack and awkward |

Yeah sometimes you jsut gotta search for the right one or mess around with one for a bit to get it to fit, its like using any other sound to be honest, gotta tinker with it till it fits. So my advice is to just find one you like and tweak it till you get it to fit or just create your own to fit the specific track.

What I do very now and then is put a little spring reverb on some percussion elements to make the sound a bit more alive and less static.
PSP pianoverb (it's free :))
Furthermore just adding shuffle to your project helps a lot as well. |

When you say one hit shots do you mean percussive like cymbal crashes or those still lovely reverbed kick booms or synth stabs etc? For percussive stuff the vengeance sample CDs are still one of the best places to go but you do have to find the right sound which can take some time. Even when you do it generally needs a heavy handed low cut, panning, reverb etc.
For synth stabs I tend to make those myself, render the stab then bring it back into the project as an audio clip to mangle up etc. You can also play about with the precise placement of it this way more easily than if it was a MIDI clip. |

Yep that's true!
Using an audio render rather than a MIDI channel helps a lot I found. It's the attack that's the critical part and that's much easier to adjust with a clip of audio. |
