i looked into the waves h comp compressor because i heard alot of well known producers use it, i wanted to try out the demo but it turns out you need to have some bull usb key called the ilok...

Why? I really liked it when I was working on FL Studio.

Depends on what I'm compressing and whether or not I want some signal coloration/effects, sidechaining, etc. For normal compression tasks, I use either the Waves C1 or the Fabfilter Pro-C. I also use channel strips on a lot of audio tracks (esp. for vocals, bass, and guitar), so I'll use the compressors in those plugins (usually WaveArts TrackPlug 5, Waves RenChannel). If I'm sidechaining something to get a ducked signal, I use the Sonitus Compressor (excellent compressor!) bundled Sonar or the Vengeance MultiBand Sidechain for frequency-specific control. For special compression effects or coloration, I usually use Camel Audio CamelPhat.

PSP Vintage Warmer 2 ($149) for normal compression duty.

Jeron Breebaart Ferox Tape Simulator for really dirty distorted compression. Really nice for a *free* plugin, I think (Windows only, though).

Here are is an example of the crazy effects you can get with the Ferox Tape Simulator. It is just a few normal drum samples plus me twirling some knobs. The "tape speed" and "feedback" knobs can be used for a tape delay effect, and when the tape speed is set between about 60% and 90% you can get a flanging metallic sound. Of course it can also be used for less exotic distorted / crunchy extreme compression. Pretty fun tool.

It gets a bit harsh in some of the parts, so don't turn it up real loud.

I've got a Chameleon Labs 7720(SSL Bus clone) on its way, heard amazing things about this, will use it on just about everything

I like Voxengo Crunchessor for a bit of dirt. The inbuilt Cubase compressor is good for a clean sound.

i use ableton's built in one quite a bit but for warmth i use UAD Fairchild, for feathering UAD LA2A, for absolute bite i haven't found anything that rivals the Sonalksis TBK3
