Review : Timo Maas (pg. 4)

Ok, I hope you guys won't mind yet another constructive review of Timo Maas's set last Fri.
I personally thought, Timo has rocked it. In fact, I say so, because of how unusual his set was. Sure, probably people who've seen him before may be saying "well, its the good ol' Timo sound", but for me it seemed innovative, deep and even (and I'll dare to say) psychedelic! We may not agree on some of these points, but you certainly cannot agree more on the fact that it pure tribal madness. Playing at 122bpms the entire 3 hours, Timo managed to make people move and get into his hypnotic rhythms without any disruption. Not only that, but he also seemed to be in a great mood, since he interacted with the crowd quite well. Every time I looked over at the DJ booth, I saw a man who truly loves what he plays and is trying to deliver his passion to the masses. If you'll ask me, I'd classify his set as Forest Techno. My only complaint about it (and truly, its not a complaint at all), is that this kind of sound should be played outdoors, under a daytime sun. Preferably on a beach or in a forest. Somewhere tropical, outside of a club environment.

Cool.
Don't want to sound stupid or even worse sound like a newb but this "Forest Techno" you speak of sounds cool. Can you suggest some sets or DJ's that play this genre?

agreed, his first two hours in particular were very creative + fresh... the music was mental and the party itself was even more haywire :crazy:

The DJ i would picture playing the closest genre would be Pena of Flow Records. He played a very similar sound at this year's Eclipse festival. Other DJs playing resembling music would be James Monro, and occasionally (in the right environment) D-Nox. If I think of more names, I would add them to the list.

It didn't seem slow at all. Sometimes bpms do not determine the intensity of the music. |

you're right about the intensity thing, but still 122 is insanely ing slow... if I had to "eyeball it" he was at least at 126...
(tho I think you were just trying to make a point about it not being mega slamming beats) |

Nope - Timo started at 122 and moved up gradually -- which I thought was GREAT! He did get up to 125 again by the end of his first hour.
He asked me before the night to bring it down throughout my set to 124, and for the last 15 minutes to drop it to 122-123.
I loved Timo's set. Great guy too. I don't really like having to bring down the tempo at peak time in the night, but these days I much prefer slower tempos (124-126). The music breathes more funk, is sexier and thicker. |
