i like it, for the most part.
i've never heard the original- or at least, the title didn't sound familiar. i didn't want to hear it first either, i'd rather judge your production first and compare it later. first of all i was a bit bothered that the repeating sample near the beginning was EQ'd with the lows killed, but then once the main groove kicked in i understood why you did it. it needs something to bridge the gap between the dubby intro into the main part- and not just like, a simple reverse crash or something.. feels like it needs a drumfill or some sort of chopped up groove to carry it over.
was the percussion strictly samples or was it loop-based? couldn't hurt to change it up a little bit (though i realize that you may have been going for the "stripped down" sound that is prevalent in so much techy stuff nowadays). i also feel that the track is a bit too long/epic for the style of music that it is. i think you could've gotten the idea across just as effectively with a slightly shortened version (like, 5 to 6 min or so). also have you thought about adding a counter-melody synth of some sort, or perhaps some sort of staccato melody line or something.. the bass is so heavy it really kills a lot of "room" in the mix but i think it could make the track more interesting and a bit more memorable if done right.
other than that i think the general idea is good and the composition is sound- just need to iron out the details a bit.
edit: actually i just read what you posted, lol, and i pretty much think exactly what you think needs to be changed. it did come in a bit loud but it would make sense so long as you have *something* there to bridge the two ideas together. like i said, a chopped/stuttered groove, a little drumfill, maybe a 1 or 2 bar "breakdown" with the original vocal sample, i dunno. something to carry it over. and now i'm repeating myself. lol |

Woh thanks Nate lol, yeah Jennie said she thought it was too long too, especially the intro. I didn't really pay attention to time so much as I did measures and didn't really notice how long the intro was. Another thing, I couldn't figure out how to get the tempo faster without completely messing up everything I did, I figured I'd just leave it slow like that and pitch it up when I play it (you'll hear it on my guestmix next week for Oscar's show).
Friend of mine said he felt there was too much bass too, not sure really how to fix that, thinking some kind of EQ or filter. The only thing I treated was that little "erotic" vocal and the first sample that comes in. Probably tweek it some more, I'm just worried about it turning into some kind of illegal remix vs an "edit" :p
Never thought of creating some kind of melody, I'll see what I can come up with at some point. I'm also working on an edit of a Slick Rick track :D
As for the percs, they were sampled from the actual song...you'd be surprised how much there is to work with. Even the bass line was really easy to take apart :wtf: Thanks Madonna! |

I quite like the intro, but the Lofi noise gets quite annoying eventually :p Maybe add some variation to it?
Things come in quite suddenly at 1.51, and it would be nice to hear them slowly build up.
I think some of the hi hats stand out a little too much. @ 3.44 that loop comes in quite abruptly. Again, I think it would sound better if things slowly progressed in.
Anyway, pretty good stuff. I like it! |

This is pretty cool Bas. Really liked the intro section, although when the loop comes in at 1:51, I think it drags a little too long until the main hook comes in. I didn't like how it suddenly comes in at 3:44, I'm sure you can come up with a more effective way to bring that in. However I don't think it necessarily needs to slowly progress in.
The bass worked pretty well with the sample, although I agree that it is a little drowning at times. There were also some parts where the percs sound a little busy with the main hook. Other than that, I think this edit worked pretty well, very nice and grooving. Love lower tempo stuff. I'm looking forward to hearing the finished product. |

| Thanks for the feedback, I think I know what I'm going to do to fix this. Will probably try to update tonight. |

see i think by itself it's definitely too long, but i could see it mixed well where the length of the beginning would end up adding tension to the inevitable big groove halfway through, kinda like a good old-school prog house track. and as for your tempo issues- i have the same problem. i can't use ableton for , i never use it. that happened to me a while ago and instead of trying to with it, i just did what you explained earlier. lol
again i like the idea though and i'm looking forward to what you end up doing to switch it up a bit. |
