What the hell happened to these guys? Moonshine seemed like a pretty successful label, supporting many of America's better DJs since the early 90s. After I believe 2004 (?) they just disappeared. For the better part of the last two years, many of the older Moonshine releases have been appearing at FYE, marked as used but unopened with the top sticker still intact. Is there a story behind the death of this label, and if so can you link to it?
Moonshine had a lot of mix "series" that highlighted styles of EDM that weren't supported otherwise on store shelves. I'm look at you, "Happy 2 B Hardcore!" I also have to give the label props for picking up on the success of funky house DJs like DJ Dan and Donald Glaude. Actually, most of my favorite American DJs had their first mixes released on this label.
Has anyone from here watched the AV:X DVDs that Moonshine put out in the early 00s? I never had a chance to watch one.
Speaking of Moonshine CDs...
Some of the 2nd-hand values for these releases are odd. Most of the Moonshine releases are worth <$5, but some of them can fetch a real amount of money. Baby Anne's "mixed live" is worth $50-100! Why ? Actually, most of the "mixed live" series is worth more than the rest of the Moonshine catalog, for good reason (that series was always well-done).
And what's the deal with DJ Culture vol 1: The Stress Compilation (Mixed by Sasha and Dave Seaman) being so common? I thought this was a rare CD, but is actually easily found in multiples "used" at FYE?!?
Electronic CD Values
Since we're talking about values of Moonshine releases, why are values for mix CDs and albums all over the place when it comes to EDM? Some items that I think are going to be valuable are easily found for $2, while other CD blind-side me with $50+ price tags! Is there a "kelly blue book" equivalent for EDM? I use Discogs and Amazon in tandem to try and get an accurate value, but Amazon dealers are weird with their pricing (it seems that if only one dealer has an item, then its $40 no matter what), and sometimes no one on Discogs has a copy of an item in stock (see the Baby Anne "Mixed Live" entry).
Beatport for Japanese music
Is there an equivalent of Beatport for Japanese music and remixes, or a workaround to get access to the Japanese iTunes store? I specifically want to get my hands on some of the mixes from Ayumi Hamasaki's "Ayu-mi-x 6 Gold." The full-length mixes of those tracks are available on the Japanese iTunes store, but I can only get the edits here off of CDs from the "Japan" stores...
finally, an ethical dilemma
There are a few "Japan/Anime" stores that are now popping up at the area malls here. Each of them have a similar selection of anime-related items: wallets, shirts, posters, and CDs. These CDs are priced at ~$13, and the selection contains all of the big J-Pop discs that I can't buy offline otherwise. While I would love to buy into these, upon closer inspection of the discs, it is clear that these stores are dealing in well-made bootlegs of these discs.
These aren't obvious bootlegs, however. The CDs are completely identical to the originals, and the packaging is the same except for some discoloration on the covers. The sound quality is exactly the same as the originals. If I was dumb I wouldn't even know that the discs were bootlegs, but I looked up the companies that were listed on the back of the CDs and found the truth out about the discs:

To complicate things, some of these apparent bootlegs are actually legit CDs in Taiwan i.e they are licensed for distribution in Taiwan but not in Japan or other countries.
Here's the dilemma. I can buy these bootlegs for less than half the price of the actual CDs, or I can get half of the music for the same amount of money spent and have peace-of-mind. Unfortunately, the way that pricing is done in Japan makes the prospect of buying legit used copies of J-Pop CDs nearly impossible, so I don't have many options here. |
