Hi all... I just got here for my 6 month stay.... And of course I need a little local help/insight ... I am looking to buy a cell phone but, of course, I don't want to be stuck getting a ty service etc..... Also I have my laptop but no speakers.... I have rca out on it so I may want to go to amp then speakers or maybe just some nice comp. speakers... I need my music fix..... Used new any will do... any ideas where I might go looking for the best deals I live on southbank and only have access to public transport... Thanks!!!!

P.S. Anyone happen to make it to the Avalanches last night... looked like fun.... I tried but left my passport in my other pants so I couldnt get in :(

As far as mobile phones go, I'd recommend you grab a pre-paid pack. That gives you a phone + accessories with a rechargable SIM card, meaning that you have a phone but you aren't stuck on a crappy plan for 2 years.

All three of the major phone companies have reasonable service, Telstra, Optus and Vodafone, although Telstra tends to overprice things...

As for the speakers, I can't really help you there, maybe somebody from Brisbane knows good places for this sort of stuff?

Yeah, a pre-paid pack is the way to go. More expensive call rates and stuff but as said before, no long term contracts or anything. Optus is probably the one to go for, cos then anyone else on optus can call you after 8pm for free for the first 20 mins...altho im not sure if this is the same for other mobile companies.

And as for speakers....errrr....

I would think that Telstra would have the best coverage for mobile phones, but if you werent going outside the cities I guess it doesnt make a difference.

with regards to speakers, if you wanted second hand ones, theres Cash Convertor(pawn shops)in plenty of suburbs in Bris Vegas.

If you wanted new ones, the best place with the largest range would probably still be Todds Hi-Fi.

There is an audio/stereo store on Ipswich Road at Wooloongabba, i dont know its name.

Harvey Norman have numerous stores around town, although I guess they would be expensive.

Videopro/Audiopro on George Street near Roma Street station probably sell speakers as well.

Brisbane is pretty quiet during the winter months, it only starts to pick up mid-spring/summer, although if I were a tourist being in queensland in winter would be heaps better than NSW or Victoria.

brisbane sux lol
i went there for the state of origin (free tix n flights aight)
IMO sydney is heaps better
to be brisbane is like parramatta (sydney suburb)
rupert
there would certainly be more to do in Sydney than here as I tourist Sydney beats every other city hands down, but I would still rather be here in Winter, the cold is gammin. And Melbourne, dont even go there.

If Brisbane was so pus, why do so many Mexicans want to move here?

rupert..sydney is physically beautiful...but in terms of living..you cant beat melbourne (lifestyle,nightlife)..even 8/10 people from sydney would agree

melbournes weather is the only thing that sucks...but its not THAT in cold!!! (well at least not all the time..hehe) and our summer is pretty good :happy2:
