Is the recession making music darker?

Heard a pretty raw trance set over the weekend (it has been YEARS since that occured), and have noticed techno is getting darker (not slower) in general.
Is the recession - and the plethora of negative news whopping us over the head daily - making more people want to hear more moody/darker music?
Thoughts? |

I remember reading an idea somewhere that the dark, droning progressive of the early 2000s was a mirror of the dark, pessimistic feelings about the future from Western populations after 9/11.
So perhaps you could be right. |

| Oh, I think it's definitely related to the recession, but not in the way you think. More specifically, labels and producers are cutting costs by recycling the same eight drum loops over and over again in every single track. So far, nobody has noticed. |

| I am sure there is a direct relationship between recessions and music.....there just has to be. |

Look at the birth of grunge in the early/mid 90's. Same deal, different genre. |

I'm not disagreeing with you. Music is definitely influenced by the environment we live in however; I don't think this recession has been long enough to have any dramatic affect on music. |

Maybe it's the other way around. Maybe all this dark music caused the recession!

I don't believe it for one reason...
...personally I think the recession is a hoax.
You ever notice how it's all you hear about these days?
Recession this, bailout that, bankrupcty this...
At first I was buying it, but now it seems a bit too much to believe. I mean who even heard of Subprime Mortgages anyways. |

Id highly recommend a book called 'The Fourth Turning'
http://www.fourthturning.com/html/fourth_turning.html
I read it back in the early 2000's and its been pretty bang on.
Essentially it describes societal progress as being cyclical (no surprise there) but more over it explains the social, psychological and economic changes that occur in general terms. Things such as womens movements in the '70s, consumer trends, economy bursts etc.
The site is a pretty poor representation of the book... it makes a very historically and scientifically accurately referenced book sound a little like some sort of mystical astrologists handbook.
the gist of it is best summed up here:
http://www.fourthturning.com/my_htm...in_history.html
(Nomad, Prophet etc. being archetypes which are described in the book)
Anyways.. they do describe musical trends as a social indicator..and while deep dark tribal was not a specific example.. it definitely hinted at it.
Then again.. deep dark tribal is infinitely better than the hipster'esque cheese they call electro nowadays right? |
