post-thread clarification

As some of you know, I made a thread yesterday about something that was bothering me. I was looking to vent my frustrations, and perhaps see what others had to say about the situation. I thought the COR would be a decent place to do this, as I have made similar threads here in the past, with some success.
In the original post, I failed to clearly describe some aspects of the event in question. This left its interpretation a bit open and subject to misunderstanding, which contributed to making it look as though I was irritated over what could be considered a trivial matter. The details are largely irrelevant at this point, so I won't mention them.
Initially, there were some sarcastic, insulting, and altogether condescending posts made in response to the topic. This was not surprising , given the nature of the COR. Ignoring the tone of these posts at first, I replied to them with neutral statements of disagreement or of further questioning. Unfortunately, this was only followed by further remarks of the same, condescending nature.
I attempted to address all these remarks on an individual basis, and why I disagreed with them. In retrospect, this was a pointless endeavour, as the individuals I was opening a dialogue with were not proving to be of the more mature, intelligent type that I know exist on this forum; those that make polite, constructive posts expressing their opinions, regardless of what those opinions may be.
Thus, the thread soon spiralled out of control, as more and more insults were thrown my way, with me continuing to respond to the majority of them. It eventually reached the point where I lost my sense of composure, was making poorly thought out posts purely for the sake of retort, and, the purpose of the thread being almost completely derailed, I decided to delete it altogether.
Let me make it clear: I do not mind people disagreeing with me. What I mind is people who disagree and do so rudely or in a condescending fashion, and even more so people who, having nothing to contribute, post simply to troll or flame, ruining what would be an otherwise productive discussion. It's really quite pathetic. But at the same time, it's rather interesting, in the sense that knowingly being a complete douchebag, if I may use the term, doesn't seem to bother some people. Different standards, I guess.
So again, while the ambiguity of my original post was indeed a catalyst for some genuine disagreement, it was not the disagreement itself that was of issue, but the character (or lack thereof) of some (not all) of the posters. To the people yesterday who posted polite, constructive remarks: regardless of your opinion on the matter, I thank you for your input and help. You're a good chunk of the reason I even bother coming back to this forum time after time.
As for this thread: I won't be surprised if I get further insults or accusations thrown my way. Quite frankly, though, at this point, I no longer care. And in the off chance that this actually doesn't occur, I will be surprised. But then again, not really.
Cheers, and see you all on the boards, both for the discussion, and for the lulz. |
