You noob. Telephone and msn are comepletely different things. One is a lot better for one thing, the other the other.
Telephone is more personal however. It's constantly on on on, you have to keep the convo going, and because you don't have the time to think out long responses or to pause for a second it ends up being far less deep.
(msn is better for seducing people)
I was using MSN when you were still playing with GI Joes. I have no need for casual conversation with people. If someone is my friend I call them periodically; not have meaningless conversations on MSN.
As for the friends overseas thing, ever heard of a little program called Skype?

I never had an interest in GI Joes when I was a kid.
Correction: When you were useing msn, I was listening to cosmic baby/vangelis and playing warcraft 2/wing commander
Cams+voice>voice. Although certainly msn's implementation of both is kind've crap, but I haven't really had the need to be on cam with multiple people at a time much.
bananas
skype > msn
but i can't see how one can compare either of these with a telephone

Skype is win, unless you have internet in NZ with 5gb caps etc.
We use it at work to test people online overseas and had to go to the unlimited plan from our provider because we were going through our monthly limit in like 1 week.
Skype chat is just as good as msn chat imo

MSN makes me feel happy and connected with the world on days that I am locked up in my room working on something all day.
The occasional instant message or 6-hour-long conversation with sporadic replies about nothing is heart-warming to say the least.
Also, I use MSN when I'm in night class, if the topic at hand is boring/useless.
Also, I have friends in Turkey, Sweden, Finland, Russia, etc. and I chatting with them is cheaper and easier on MSN.
