i'm using a 909 kick peaking at -4 db.
as for the bass, i'm using a sytrus 303 bass preset that i've tweaked a little. it's running through the ableton compressor w/ attack 21.5 ms, release 45.3 ms, ratio 2.46, threshold -12.9, and makeup gain on. this gives me about 6 dbs of gain reduction. i'm also using otium bassline FX to keep my bass frequencies below 300 hz in mono.
then i have another compressor sidechained to the kick with attack 37.3 ms, release 54.8 ms, ratio 4.9, threshold -18.8.
i guess my real question is how can i make my bass sound deeper and thicker? right now it sounds a little to thin to me. |

| Does the bass sound thin when you solo it? |

If it sounds not as deep i would suggest maybe setting up a 2nd bass channel filtered down and used as a sub. Make sure its in Mono.
oh and i 2nd sidechaining |

the file was deleted but here are a few "tricks" i use to mix kick and bass.
- Tune the kickdrum in the same key as the bassline
- Make the kick shorter (more room for the bass)
- Sidechain the bassline with the kick as trigger
- Put a slow chorus on the bassline
- Play with compression on the seperate tracks.
- Make group track to route the kick and bass and use compression on this group
- EQ example: If you boost a frequency in the kick drum, cut this frequency in the bassline.

| most of the time proper EQ will fix this problem better than any other trick there is |

Sidechain the bassline to the kick.
Dont put the bassline notes on the kick (Unless its mid bass)
If you insist on putting the bassline notes on the kick , dont use a super bassy kick.
The best option is to try a bassline pattern that doesn't involve notes that conflict with the kick , since sometimes sidechaining can make the bassline sound not 'natural'. |

+1. if your bassline sounds good by itself, perhaps you should with the kick and leave the bassline alone. "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" right? your bassline should (depending on how and what you produce) be able to hit at the same time as your kick; if it sounds like , it means the two are sitting near the same frequency range. EQ, EQ, EQ, or choose a different bass instrument, or choose a different kick.
also +1 to the "make the kickdrum shorter" idea. i've also recorded my bassline into a wav file and made the individual notes shorter by chopping a couple hundred milliseconds off the end of each tail.. it made for a tighter, more "staccato" sounding bass that conflicted with the kick less than previously |

I find if u want to fatten up a bass line slap some distortion on it I use logic so I just put the distortion plugin either overdrive or dist. 2 just fiddle around with how much you distort it you don't want to much but I find it fattens it up real quick. I did it in a recent song I just made I would upload a sample but I'm in the country driving up
the coast haha thankgod for iPhones. :D
but seriously I usually just eq it if I just want it to be sub bass I eq it down alot totally cut the highs but if i'm using it for mid and sub I don't take out alot of the highs maybe just abit. I put distortion then I sidechain usually ALOT too.
Hope this helped |
