I can't say I was particularly inspired by this set. Apart from the Moshic track and the last two it doesn't really cover any new ground compared to your previous sets, and there's nothing in how you mixed or structured it to defamiliarise the style. You've been drawing from the same small pool of artists for a while - I've probably heard most of Tomic's album in your sets by now, and Fitalic, Liquid Soul and FREq are all staples - and there's only so many sets you can make out of such a small selection of music.
Sorry to say that, but I think you'd prefer honesty. |
Yes, I do. Thanks. Disappointing, because I think that besides wandering for a little bit long in the middle, this is probably the best set I've done.
This was basically conceived around the Moshic track; I've been wanting to start a set with that for ages. Using some Sun Control Species tracks in a mix has also been a long-time aim, which I suppose I took a little too far.
I hear what you're saying about the use of same artists over and over, however if you appreciate this style of music I don't think it should be that bigger issue; I use different tracks every time and the result changes. FREq, Liquid Soul and Fitalic each have two albums and a smattering of singles, while Tomic has a single album and about 20 EP tracks to his name. There's plenty of material there to draw from. What is your exact gripe with the overusage of these artists; that all the sets end up sounding the same?
I do have a set which I've been attempting to put together since March 2009 which contains completely different artists to everything I usually do, but it just won't work. I really need just another two bridging tracks towards the start, but they don't come along all that easily for this particular style. Perhaps I'll do a techno or house set in the next couple of weeks. I've got a lot of spare time at the moment seeing as I'm now unemployed. |

I appreciate that your sets have covered different areas within the prog-psy sound and this one is slightly different again - it sounded like your slowest mix so far but when I listened to your Twelve Hours mix it really impressed me, and your mixes have been steadily less inspiring since then. Perhaps it's because that was one of my first proper exposures to prog-psy but it seemed to sound fresher and hit harder where it counted.
I know you're using good artists, but they are not exactly genre-hoppers or Aphex Twin: all the tracks you've used by them are prog-psy or prog house. Artists have signature sounds and approaches or otherwise you wouldn't follow them, and your mixes are shot through with the same few artists and their fingerprints. I don't think there's anything wrong with playing well known artists if they're good, but there was unfortunately nothing here new or surprising to me: the new artists you introduced to your usual selection are well known in prog circles and you didn't really explore those new sounds very much.
You've expressed a lot of dissatisfaction with the state of prog psy recently, and I think you've got to ask: if there are only five or six artists in the genre worth playing, then what is the inherent shelf-life of the genre? I'd recommend either finding out some new prog psy or going in a different direction. |

I think Twelve Hours was a more inspiring set irrespective of how fresh you were to the genre. There was a lot more variation in there and greater jumps in intensity.

I can agree with that.

To be perfectly honest, I'm ing dissatisfied with the state of danceable music as a whole, and I have been for some time. I very much enjoy a lot of drum and bass and dubstep at the moment, but I far prefer four to the floor music for 'energetic' listening. At the end of last year I was asked to compile my top ten albums and the only upbeat release I could think of worth mentioning was Union Jack's Pylon Pigs. It seems to me that at the moment, pretty much everything truly inspiring rests in the field of downtempo and less energetic stuff. Though I enjoy and own plenty of slower stuff, it's higher intensity music that really tickles me properly. Techno and tech-house are mostly boring as hell, trance is a cluster, progressive house of the 'real' kind has momentarily disappeared, prog-psy is devoid of both creativity and musical talent and straight psy-trance is a complete cheese fest. Pretty much the only danceable genre that still holds weight for me these days is traditional house of the Defected or even Jody Wisternoff type, but that's not nearly as satisfying to make well-structured mixes with as the deeper, darker and more entrancing genres.
Yes, I'm a picky cunt.
On the shelf life of prog-psy, I frequently listen to 100+ releases in a sitting on beatport, and they all follow the same formula: kick, bass and then five or six different trancey noises fired off every 2-3 seconds throughout the length of the track. There's no progression and no logical structuring or evolution of melodies. It's just wannabes sitting at their computers wishing they understood music theory and how to write something decent. I know because as someone who has tooled around with production a bit, I've produced exactly the same with my complete lack of musical training.
Thanks 'J. I've got to do this weekend, but come Monday I'm going to delve into my hard drive and make the most ridiculous mix of random I can throw together. You've inspired me. |

Ok, I listened last night, and listened again now.
This is a great set.
1) Despite the fact you thought that it wandered a bit in the middle, I disagree. The flow was fine, and any dalliances are not really worth mentioning.
2) Your mixing is awesome, and particularly smooth. I've probably asked you this a bunch of times (I never actually read your posts, because they're rubbish), but what do you use to mix?
3) My gf is not a fan of house music. Electronic, yes (in a big way) but house, no. That said, when I play your prog-psy mixes out on the deck, she always wanders out and tells me that the tunes are good. She asks me the genre, and I tell her "progressive-psy(trance)". She tells me I'm a genre wanker :p
4) We've started calling it 'Psy-House", which I much prefer as a genre label, since quite a bit of it seems to lack the full/rich melodies of progressive house, but retains the minor 'psy' elements. Psy House. This genre probably exists already though :o
...
I don't know enough about the genre to be any more specific on the tunes used. All I can say is that I like them a lot, and always jump at the chance to grab some more mixes in whatever we'll call this genre :p |

Thanks mate.
2) I was wondering whether someone would mention the difference in mixing. Usually I tend to work very heavily with the bass equaliser and a little bit of mid, but for this set I used a crossfade style technique for almost every transition and didn't touch the EQs at all. For this kind of music I prefer this style of mixing a lot more. For more aggressive genres I tend to lean towards more aggressive mixing. I've been using Ableton to mix for some time now. I sold my decks about two years ago I think.
4) I've not heard that before but I think it's a good label.
Again, thanks for your continuing interest. :) |

Hey, thanks for mixing them :)
I take it we won't be getting too many more from you though? When do you go away on your 'journey'? |

| Probably the best prog-psy mix I've heard on here in a long time. Banging tracks, none of that minimal muck thats infested progpsy lately. Good stuff, make more :D |
