My Oakenfold Rant...
View this Thread in Original format

OK, my friend and I just saw Oakenfold here in Orlando. The club he was spinning at was about medium size, but it was still packed shoulder to shoulder...actually the most crowded I've ever seen it, and proubably the most crowded I EVER will see it. He put on a decent set and had the crowd moving...

Now he ends his set at about 2:30 - 2:45, and they start kicking people out. The crowd makes there way to the street. About half of the crowd heads home, and the other half are hanging out in front of the door, saying goodbye or just waiting. About 3:30 the crowd dwindles down to about 20 people, hoping to say a quick "hello" to Oakenfold, or get a flyer signed...myself included. about 4:30 the corwd is down to five people. FIVE of his fans waiting about 2 hours for him. With his drivers waiting right in front of the club, we figured it couldnt be long now. Finally at about 4:45 he makes his way out the front doors.

Here comes my rant...

With five people there, a couple wanting autographs, my friend and I wanting a quick picture...he seeming annoyed signs a flyers, and before he gets into his car takes ONE very fast picture...which his friend pursuaded him to do.

Now as a DJ, I really wonder if he realizes how damn cool of a job he has. Does he not realize there are thousands of unknown DJ's who would kill to be in his position? DJ's who dont care about money, dont care about the $40,000.00 he gets to spin for 3 hours. Im talking about DJ's who would love that huge of a crowd moving to their music, the music they are creating. DJ's who would get so stoked to have 1 fan come up to them and tell him he had a good set, muchless have a handfull of people who waited 2 hours just to get an autograph.

Now I do realize he must get that everywhere and everytime he preforms. But what I want to know is, at what point did he stop appreciating people who genuinly appreciate and enjoy what he does. Did it just get old to him..having a crowd waiting for him everywhere he goes? Is it annoying to him, like an invasion of privacy? Or am I just being stupid???

All I know is if I were in his position, I would be all about my fans, cause with out them it would be worthless!

(I dont know how to attach pictures, otherwise I would have attached the one we got with him)

Maybe he was just tired? I live in Gainesville and I went to Ultra so I know he played Ultra, some places in Miami, Orlando, Gainesville, Jacksonville, and is still working his way up the coast. That's going to wear you down, no matter who you are.

He has been doing big shows for a really long time. He is a busy busy man. You should be happy you got a picture. It's not like he owed you that.

Don't get me wrong, I'd be pissed off if he didn't stop to say hi, but you can't really blam the guy. :)

No ur not being stupid. Oakie is very arrogant. Ur experience supports & confirms what I've been saying all along: that Oakie is just in it for the $, he doesn't give a rat's ass about his fans. The fact that he couldn't spare 3 mins to sign 5 autographs is disgusting.

i agree w/ twilo. the fact that he can't spend 5 minutes with 5!! of his hardcore fans makes me sick. even if he was tired, what's another 5 minutes? he might be very busy, but if he can't give back to his fans, some travelling hours to see him, what's the point in listening?

I think the hard work aspect is not to be ignored either. My friend interviewed(by email) Paul Van Dyk for a college project he was working on, and PvD basically blew him off after his agent said he would help out. The confirmation to help shows some of the brotherhood out there in the scene, but the questions he got back weren't complete sentences, missspelled, etc. It was obvious no more than 5 mins was spent looking at them. Now people don't often chastize PvD for being arrogant the way they do Oakey, but this could be evidence to that. In reality I agree with the hard work idea. They are hard working, even if iit is the coolest job in the world. Besides, they are superstars, would you expect some other big music star to meet you after every performance and make deep and meaningful conversation? Not likely. Sure the venues are smaller often(not necessarily in Oakeys case) but these people tour more than an average music group. Plus we all know that these are normal people and how would you treat somebody that was harassing you at 5 in the morning if all you wanted to do was sleep? I understand the drive, but just cause they are famous doesn't mean people are superheros. end rant. peace.

sorry man.. but PvD and his staff are very great persons.
i personally have emailed then. i asked for signed photo, and it was sent. i asked for a tshirt and it was sent. i asked for meeting and i had it. man. they are the best. when i was at ultra.. i personally met him and his trustee, the one i always contact by email... so i cant say: pvd is arrogant or any other stuff.

greetings.

Pvd isn't arrogant. A friend of mine sat next to him on plane in business class & he said he was extremely nice. He even gave him a record (for an angel).

I think Mauro Picotto takes the cake for Down to earth DJs...he is so friendly....he can't speak English that well, but still he tries his best, he even responds on his Forum at BXR and replies to his emails ....that's pretty cool :)

arturob
