Basically Im looking for synth that have 'distortion synthesis' abilities , like FM/PM stuff.
Cuz I'm looking to mess around with FM basslines , Nitrous Oxide style :)
So far I only have Predator.
Anything else? |

| Surge has some nice FM options - oh and FM8 can sound plenty "analog" too |

blah - no offense, but that buzzword has pretty much lost all meaning as far as I'm concerned. Anything that sounds good nowadays is called "analog" or "warm" and anything that sounds bad is called "digital" or "cold" and no two people seem to be able to hear sounds in the same way anyway. Most analog synths don't even sound alike, nor does Sylenth1 sound exactly like any of them. Just sayin'...;) That said, almost everybody that uses Zebra praises it for its analogue-ness, and it will do just what you're looking for and so much more, so I reiterate that you should check out the demo.
Anyway, a few others you may want to consider/demo:
- NI Massive - has ring-mod, phase-mod, waveform position-mod (can give a variety of hardsync-like effects), and FM. You might not find the presets to your liking, but if you know your way around a synth, there's not much it won't do as far as subtractive synthesis goes and the various oscillator modulation features will let you dial in as much grittiness as you need.
- Rob Papen Blue - technically, it's an FM/subtractive hybrid synth that also adds limited additive and spectral synthesis. It's possibly more FM in its architecture than you're looking for, but it gets killer FM basses and makes some of the nicest pads and plucks/arps I've ever heard.
- FXpansion DCAM SynthSquad - I've only used the demo, but it may actually be exactly what you're looking for, particulalry if you use Fusor to combine Strobe (subtractive) and Cypher (FM). It can be a huge resource hog though, IME.
- Nord Lead/Rack 3 - yeah, I know, you specifically mentioned VSTs, but if hardware is a possibility, definitely check this one out for its subtractive/FM synthesis capabilities. The FM on this thing will get downright nasty if you want it to. |

I honestly use Subtractor for 90% of my basses now.
I find as far as "analog" goes, its the closest I can find too it. And it is also very capable of some nice sounding FM basses.
I think ideally however, you can take the analog sounds of Subtractor, and the FM sounds of sytrus, and wind up with some really sweet basslines.
Its weird because my first sequencer was Reason, when I was a complete newbie, and overtime I grew to hate the sound of subtractor (I don't know why honestly).
When I got to the world of VSTs I was like "wow these sound so much better", and then it took me another 2 years to move back to Subtractor.
It just has a very sharp, present sound I don't find in a lot of vsts. Even sylenth at sometimes seems a bit "flimsy" in my mixes but subtractor ALWAYS holds out much better. |

@DJ Robby Rox
Good idea , I have sytrus so I could try layering it with Sylenth1 or Predator.
@cryophonik
I think your right , 'analog' is used pretty loosely nowadays.
But when I used 'analog' , I was trying to mean VST that could produce that 'warm' effect , Cuz I had that thought that most basslines sounds warm.
(I'm not saying that 'cold' isn't desirable , just that 'cold' isn't exactly suitable for basslines.. Or maybe I'm wrong?)
And thanks for that long list of synths , will check them out soon. |

Sylenth does have FM and PWM btw. |

Yeah, FM8 has a specific big fat knob that says ANALOGUE, which imparts tuning instability. Its also got another big knob which says UNISON which is what most people are talking about when they talk about a synth sounding warm and "analogue". |
