the big club and electronic music bust in my opinion can be blamed on the following:

1) the smoking law. People are sick of fighting crowds to get to a cramped patio space. Theyd rather be in a smaller venue (or at home) where they can come and go easier to get that puff in. Anyone who denies the impact of the smoking law on nightlife lives in fantasyland as far as im concerned.

2) the .05 law has scared a lot of people from going out. When you can get your car taken away, fined and told to go to alcohol rehab without even the chance of a trial who can blame them?

3) condo condo condo... they are shutting down the clubs for condos and not granting many (if any) new licences for replacement venues. Therefor the old venues are dying out with nothing to replace them.

Toronto (politicians and whiners) are definitely getting what they want. A bland, uppity corporate wine and cheese condo party of a city

hahahaha..I've been going there for about 5 years and I've never been...upstairs is where they have the bands or the occasional djs.

3. Toronto’s Faux Electronica Explosion
Last year, everyone (including me, I’ll admit it) was talking about how 2009 was going to be the year when Toronto’s electronic scene exploded on a global scale. We had high hopes, with bands like Thunderheist, Crystal Castles and more garnering overseas attention. Sadly, not only did our electronic scene not explode, it actually kind of imploded. Many bucked the big box clubs in favour of lounges and cheaper bars, coupled with a serious lack of cash for big occasions, like Fashion Week and TIFF-related parties. In the end, the DJ circuit and electronic music took a serious hit."

While bands like Crystal Castles, and Thunderheist are good in their own right.. I don't know if you can lump them in with the club scene, at least in the conventional sense.

The scene they attract is a little different from the club scene. Hipsters arent really clubbers...

I can actually and add the the urban scene has really put a dent on the younger generations urge to be exposed to good electronic music. instead of that cheesy stuff.

although I can admit the cheesy gino beats of 95-00 were what got me going on this scene.
