End of a Year, End of a Decade

So, another year and another decade are just about to become history. I usually like to look back and see how I did over the past year in terms of musical accomplishments, and now I find myself looking back at the last decade as well. This past year I had a few successes, but overall it seems a pretty big flop in many ways. I had several songs released, but my overall song output was much lower than it's been since I started producing. That was largely due to having a 2-year old son demanding most of my free time and being too tired afterward to get very much focused music production time in - don't get me wrong, though, I'm not complaining - making music doesn't come close to the joy that my son brings me! But, I haven't finished a track in about 4 months.
Looking back over the decade, I just think wow - things have really changed! I went from being a 100% live performer finishing up grad school to one of those guys with a (gasp!) career and family, built a home studio, started recording/producing obsessively, and played very few live gigs. It's pretty amazing to look back and see how much things have changed in ten years, both for me personally and in the music industry, not to mention how fast it seems to have gone by.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to getting back into the swing of things early next year with no real goals other than to get back on track (no pun intended). As far as the next decade goes, I'll probably be putting a lot of time and effort into nurturing my son's musical talents and hopefully getting him involved in music production, piano/bass/guitar/drum/whatever lessons, etc.
So, how about you guys? How was your year/decade? Any plans for the next year/decade? |

this year didnt give me much. i gave much though, hope to get something back some day. im not sure ive finished a single track all year. its ing scary how fast times goes right now, i cant really follow. i must put my together and start focus if i wanna go somewhere from here on. the whole decade is a pretty crazy ride, musical wise. from djeing to producing to starting my own label, though without any success at all lol. i dont care, i love every minute ive spent on music, in all forms and im learning alot. worst period musical wise where around late 2007, early 2008 when i got lost in hardware synths and computer issues. finally got rid of everything crap and starting to get back on creativity using macbook and software only. next up trying to put together an album and a liveact. |

sounds nice cyro. state of mind is the most important thing imo, and that can be hard time come by sometimes, even if you aren't busy. congrats on your healthy son too. i have a few friends with a boy that age, one of them loves to dance to house/techno already. pretty cute. and kudos on getting him started early. i was around my mother's beautiful singing/guitar playing/songwriting from the momemt i was born, so that really played a part for me later. wish they would have given me piano lessons or something like that before elementary school. luckily i went to that elementary school for 5 years and had the same music teacher the whole time, so there was lots of music and singing then.
as far as my plans, i read you guys mentioning finishing songs. for me that has been difficult because i didn't want to "release" anything that wasn't up to par with what the top jocks were playing, which is essentially a lot of the time song of my favorite music.
it took some charisma and courage, but i switched DAWs and that helped me out a lot, i'm very confident making tunes now because i have a formula that i can use and depend on to be consistent. essentially that is what i have been after. now that i don't have to worry about if i can produce, it's time to start releasing.
so for plans, going to move to europe and try to take the next step |

I started to produce late 2007 and all I can say about 2009 is that the latter half of the year ive really got to grips with things. That in turn , and with more studying , I personally think ive got alot better and have much more understanding of things. All that is holding me back now is the need for a new computer and spare time. |

Good thread.
This year I finally got the studio (loose term!) in a decent state focussed on the right kit. I also signed my first releases. Besides the signings, this year I'm getting a lot more happy with my productions - but like so many others I don't think I'll ever be truly happy with them.
My long suffering music mentor and I finally got our arses into gear and got our collaboration up and running and have signed our first track.
Decade - in order:-
Got my degree
Got a decent job
Got the right girlfriend
Got a mortgage
Got a son
Got an Access Virus
Got a Nord Rack
All very serious |

A decade is way too much time to comment on musical progress. Although it is note worthy that this was my first full decade as a "trance producer".
In the past year, I've completed only two songs. Both remixes. I also wasted a lot of time playing World of Warcraft through Sept and Oct, then before that wasted a lot of time playing Unreal Tournament III over the Summer.
Then around late Oct I realized that gaming was taking up way too much of my time so I decided to mostly give it up, especially online gaming, to concentrate on music. Since then I almost compelted a track, but abandoned it 1/3 through. I also am very near completing my Alesis Andromeda sound bank. Very exciting. |

You've also now finally mentioned the Andromeda in precisely 1000 posts.
Congratulations :clown:
Too much has happened in the last decade to possibly mention here. Not all of which I remember clearly I might add.
Musically I started the road of production just over 12 months ago when I bought Cubase after dicking around on FL and Reason for a few weeks and finally catching the bug big time.
After a year of long and hard study I feel that i'm just about ready to start learning properly. I must have bought and sold every synth out there in the last year (except an Andromeda....) and realised that 3-4 softsynths are probably enough for me. My focus from this point on is mixing and signal processing. This is where I'm heading now.
It's better than golf anyway ;) |

so which one brings you more joy..? Lol :happy2: keyboard - baby "umm" keyboard - baby "umm" no your right tho cryo the greatest thing one can have in this world is a child.
on a serious note, I agree with you all, Palm damm time does go fast, i just turned 30 sorry for those a little older, and im thinking what the hell have i been doing with my life. I been at music for a little over 4 years, only now taking it seriously. the last decade well I have gone through many crossroads and made many turns, and I think it aint going to stop just yet either. But for me my main focus is to maintain my musical desire at all times regardless of where I am at in life.
But, all the best fokes, been a pleasure on here i must say :toocool: |
