I've been offered the RME Fireface 400 interface - any good?

Hi all,

after 7 months tooing and froing with a Steinberg interface (the MRX)the supplier has agreed to replace it with an alternative as the Steinberg has a major glitch that cannot be fixed.

I've been offered a similar value alternative, the RME Fireface 400 retailing here for 625.

Most important need for me is SOUND QUALITY, particularly of the MIC XLR stages.
The Steinberg has built in MIC DSP stages which I am guessing imparted some sort of pleasing colour to the MIC stages but I'm not sure ....... if you know what I mean - I have'nt done some kind of A/B test.

Now I've just read the spec on the RME and from first glance the MIC stages are'nt particularly highlighted so I'm slightly concerned they won't sound as nice as the Steinberg. I don't know whether this should bother me or not. I already have a Rode tube mic which has it's own distinct colour anyway and various plug-ins such as T-RACS Fairchild 670 emulation which I use on the vocals.

The RME is 24 bit. My projects are usualy 24 or 32bit float.
Need minimal latency of course which the Steinberg highlighted as one of the core product features when used with C5 although I still found latency problems even with just one hardware synth (roland fantom) used.

I won't be buying any separate MIC preamp or anything as I don't have the funds (well my wife won't let me more like).

Any thoughts.

I'm not bothered about having more ins and outs, 8 is more than enough for me. Again sound quality is my focus.

SORRY

I've just noticed a v similar topic below where people are talking highly of RME.
I can't go to the RME 800 btw. I have to take the 400 as replacement to the Steinberg as they cost about the same.

I just replied on anjunabeats, but to summarize - hell yeah, go for the RME FF400! I'm considering a FF800 myself!

If cryo and magnus like RME, then that's pretty much all I need to know.

Cheers fellas.

The FF400 is probably going to be my next major purchase. Missed out on one I saw on a great Craigslist deal or I would have had it months ago. Have only heard the best things about them.

upgrade from the ol motu..! i thought about getting RME as well, but thought that motu would do the job for my second time spend on a audio card. RME was up there in my choices, though given my experience so far with production being limited i took a step back from it, but next time, next time i tellz yah.

Go the RME :tongue3
