I always start of light with an instrumental opening. This allows you to build into your set instead of trying to keep the pace going.
As above Moonshine is a beautiful opener, I prefer Majik Journey as a finisher though.
My new Summer CD had as its opener Transa - Marcata, which is taken from their new album which has at least 4 good openers in it. |

Quick question. Do you guys let the whole song play , or do you start off at a certain point (say 20 seconds in or something) and just fade into it with volume so it doesn't sound so abrubt.
Does that even make any sense? |

Didn't quite catch you on the one, if I understood you correctly then I would say:
I put the needle a while before the first beat, and with the channel volume set to off, press start, then turn the channel volume all the way up, but a bit slow, so it would sound as if the vinyl noise is fading in, not "Slam-Entering" ....
And for the guyz recommending energetic tracks:
Whatever style you choose (remember that some folks also want to start calm and have a buildup) for a first track, whether an intro or just an opener, it must not have a boring intro. Sure, we TA's find the interest in the most boring of boring intros, but you gotta think of the simple people ;) , you need an intro with action, that's why I recommended either tracks with instrumental intros, or Scot Project stuff, which always has interesting intros, Sven&Gil who like putting nice tricks in the intros, and, yes also stuff like B&J - Cream (PvD) and Syntone/Silverblue stuff which have very energetic intro's, plus the Syntnoe/Silverblue stuff have lots of action and don't feel very long.
You might also want to try stuff that begins with melody, example would be the Moonman remix of Cygnus X, or something like Chicane - Sa;twater if you want to begin chilly. |

| Arome-Somebody (DJ Scot Mix)....really gets people pumped for the hard stuff that's coming...I love to start it off with that track. I disagree with using 'Hands Up'. It's far too good of a track to start off with. I always like to throw that in toward the end. Just my opinion tho. |

call me what you will, but my TA in traning opinion is that you should start with
something that builds up quickly, like say
Eon - Pocket Damage
the downside to this specific track is it kinda sets the bar up high, kind of forces you to stay on your toes the whole set and keep playing blast em tracks like this, which could be a good thing
Ferry Corsten - Punk (Kid Vicious remix) is a pretty godd track to star with IMO...
for a set youd like to buildup, Slyder - Score is pretty good
its a 9 minute track that starts pretty simple with its baseline and every 16 or 32 beats adds something in, abruptly slows down at the beggining of the 3rd minute, to then release synths to make the crowd crap its pants, and then progressively calms down again....
a bit dramatized, but ah well... |

A few things to consider when picking out your intro tracks... If you're say DJing at a rave and the guy before you is playing trance, more than likely he will end with energetic uplifting trance. When I pick my tracks I like to play tracks that can only be played as an intro track. Tracks that makes the crowd turn their heads to see who the DJ is. Something that breaks for the previous flow of the previous DJ. I guess it's a marketing thing so people will remember your face.

on a side note:
do you guys predefine a playlist before going to a gig,
or do you guys just like pick out some tracks you know you
want to play and just spontaneously play different things
depending on the mood, both ways have worked for me
then again, all ive played are small parties. |
