EDIT: Oh and be sure to keep several "sure things" handy that you know will rip up the dancefloor no matter what. A popular vocal house classic (pretty much anything from Guetta) or a good ol' rock n roll mashup can save pretty much any room in case it starts to struggle! |
i'm back in DC. it's at this place called Chi Cha Lounge on U st and 16th. So yeah, if anyone is in DC come check me out.
thanks for the feedback brad and everyone else. and yeah, its like, I have a few playlists with like 8-9 hours of music to choose from just for 2nite and then I have my fail safes... swedish house gangstas, guetta, bob sinclair, cause I know ppl will eat it up. I'm not expecting too many house afficionados but you never know
I just really want to be able to sneak in some prog and/or tech house when I can, just to maintain integrity. I can only the the villains remix of britney spears or tracks by moto blanco so much.
you guys are definitely a help

What sets my mind at ease when i play out is going through my songs and putting them into a playlist (don't know what you're using i use TSP)..
Personally i become quite flustered when i'm in my 4th/5th hour and i'm struggling to find tracks that would suit. I should be comfortable at that stage and enjoying myself. A playlist has allowed me to do this in the past. Just means you're not spending half your time looking for tracks as you've done most of that work before hand.
Don't have the punters going home saying it was good but he (you) kept playing songs I didn't know... |
yeah i'm using traktor scratch pro and then connecting a portable midi controller to my computer. I think I could just connect my comp to the CDJs they have there and use them to control traktor... I THINK. but i've never done that so i'll stick wit what i got for now. I'm going to go like, 2 hours early to make sure everything pops off. otherwise i'll be burning CDs, ugh |

quotes of my evening...
girl: you need to play something we can dance to
me: uh... electronic DANCE music
girl: no, something we can shake our asses to
me: uh... do you hear what i'm playing?
girl: hip-hop
me: nas said hip-hop was dead
girl 2: can you play persian music?
me: huh?
girl 2: you don't know persian music???!?!?!! (as if I had offended her)
me: uh... no? like what, name an artist
girl 2: *inaudible* (chaush goosh? something like that)
me: sorry
girl 2: well there are lots of persians in DC and if you want to be good you'll play persian music.
at which point i turned my back on that crusty persian bitch
*** now that i think about it though... i titled this thread using the term legit, but if girls came and bitched about how i wasnt playing enough rap, then maybe it wasnt so legit lol. considering. although, i got paid so i was happy
thank GOD I had enough friends there dancing their asses of that it was whatever. my friends danced, other people stopped being so pretentious and decided to have fun.
only problem? when my computer was unplugged and the music shut off. but for some reason, it didn't matter and i just rebooted and started up again. had to play some rap, madonna, whatever. another year of this and hopefully i can get my pedigree up and go play all dirty dark grimy house somewhere
thanks for the suggestions and feedback. |

And yeah Stu, DJ Booth :p You silly mod you. |
No, you were being a prick. |

Yes... the typical "play this, play that" crowd.
Those are difficult moments for being dj. Either you can receive comments by the good way or you get f-ed up & say "f-off!".
You cant please them all, and every track you play is the wrong one:)
But hey... next time can be better -> be positive and try to get a gig from a place where you can play house! |

| Sounds like it went pretty well! Hate to say it but you're never gonna get away from requests even in the underground clubs. It's easy though just say "that's a great track, but I don't have it with me right now" and if they keep coming at you just keep shrugging your shoulders and look really busy and eventually they'll get the idea :P |

| end of the day, if you got the paid the management liked it :) like when i go out and hear rap, top 40 for a few hours i don't like it but what can you do? |

Seriously? You don't have any tracks by chaush goosh?!?! That girl is right, you'll never make it in DC.
