I have written a paper on the development of electronic equipment and instruments used for live application (band performances, shows etc.), and how it has changed and will continually add new dimensions to a live music performance.

Purpose of the paper: To create a website targeting a niche topic of interest.

My Idea: A forum where users discuss usage of electronic instruments and equipment, techniques, applications, bands and local shows that use and push boundaries with modern electronic tools.

My Problem: I am having a hard time coming up with a clever domain name. The domain name is essentially going to glue the purpose and idea of my website together. It is preferred that the domain use key words used for the theme of the website. I cannot think of anything clever, but I am here to ask for suggestions, and any help is very much appreciated. I have copied words and ideas below that come to mind when I think of the main theme of the website:

*electronic instruments, live application

*electronic equipment & modern music

*classic instruments & high-tech gear

It doesn't really matter because the perfect domain is taken already. These bastard companies buy domains and try to sell them for thousands of times what they're worth. The problem is no one actually buys them, cause they're so unaffordable. So all they really do is hinder creative expression all over the world.

Oops.

The best way to get a domain name is to use targeted keywords from your chosen subject.

Write a list of 50 targeted keywords that cover the subject you wish to create the website about.

jumble them up, play with the combinations and something will rear its ugly head :)

I use to build websites on my own and I learned myself so anything I say is NOT likely to be what you would learn formally.

But one thing I learned is domain names mean nothing.
They don't need to be "clever" at all.

The name "myspace" is one of the stupidest names someone could have came up with, but it was the effort, the design, the simplicity, and how the site catered to users that made the site what it was.

A domain name should only be short and easy to remember. Most would agree it should somehow be associated to what the site is about, but look at some other websites out there.

I can give you a list of 100 very popular domain names, and I guarantee you can't even guess what the sites are about or what they do. (you would have no idea what "ebay" was unless you used it or heard about it first) If this is for school I can see why they would focus on it so much (they need to make it look like your money is actually going somewhere useful) but in practice I'd venture to say it really does not need to be clever at all.

In fact, I think a domain name has .0000001% to do with the actual success of a website. Put 10 names in a hat and pick one, seriously.

I disagree, the name myspace exactly captures the essence of what the website is about. Your own webspace, about yourself, maintained by yourself.

Having a smart catchy domain name for your brand/product can improve results dramatically. Especially in online marketing.

A domain name that has to do with the product and/or website is 100% relevant to the success of the website, especially when it comes to things like Google organic searches, Adwords and likes. The spiders which crawl your site look at the domain name first then check the content on the page for relevance which in turn goes towards your ratings in google. This is also only 1 small part of the complete SEO you should have on your site if you wish it to be successful.
