Shot at Berlin’s infamous “Temple of Techno,” the Berghain Club, at Amnesia and at Privilege in Ibiza, and at Barcelona’s popular Sónar Festival, this biopic paints a fascinating portrait of Chilean-born, Berlin-based superstar DJ Ricardo Villalobos and illuminates the mystique which has fascinated the club world since his meteoric rise on the scene. With this new film, illustrious German clubland documentarian Romuald Karmakar completes his trilogy about electronic music and club culture in the early 2000’s. Centering on interviews with the techno-maestro discussing how he thinks, how he hears and how he produces his music, this very public artist gets the introspective treatment. And by observing him in his home studio while he listens to new records and discusses them; works on trippy remixes of classical recordings; and shows off the workings of his intricate modular-system synthesizer, viewers glimpse an engaging Villalobos who is undoubtedly a true professional at the top of his game.
How does Ricardo Villalobos, one of the most acclaimed DJs of electronic music, think? How does he hear? How do Herbert von Karajan and Mussorgky's horns end up in the studio of this Chilean musician from Darmstadt, Germany? What happens inside his machines and modules long after they are switched off? How do people react to his art of DJ-ing at Berlin's infamous club Berghain, the temple of techno? What do people expect for their money when they go to the international stages of Ibiza? Do we actually have more sex than our parents? And how do we handle the power of our luck?
After his films '196 BPM' (Berlinale 2003) and 'BETWEEN THE DEVIL AND THE WILDE BLUE SEA' (Locarno 2005), VILLALOBOS is the last part of a free trilogy about aspects of electronic music and club culture in the first decade of our new century.

He played incredibly long tracks that catapulted not only thousands of people in the club, but also himself, into another time zone. He lived with passion what we could hear, a kind of tireless call to defend by all means necessary, the reduction of our lives to the mere structure and beat of pop songs.
