I need to start DJ'ing.
I know you guys probably get a lot of these threads but I still hope you will bestow some knowledge upon me.
I know absolutely nothing about DJ'ing.
All I have is a love for the music and a desire to create it.
What do you suggest I do to get underway?
I would like to shadow a DJ to watch and learn but I know of none.
I'm currently in the Seattle area. I like most all trance, anything like : face to face - armin van buuren, Arena - W&W, and I love the group carbon based lifeforms.
Any help is appreciated, thanks guys |

Read/watch those videos. They'll teach you more than we can write down here.
Once you've watched them come back and ask some more specific questions you might have and we can try and help you further :)
Just an idea.

What you want is to produce music then, not to DJ. |

Mixing is important but even more important I think is to rock a party as a DJ and get used to playing music loud.
I wouldn't start with a fancy mixer. I would start with some loud PA speakers. This will give you an idea as to what songs to play and choose. Songs just so happen to sound different when played loud. So you will get an idea as to what is going to work at a party.
When playing loud you will notice new things in the songs and also think about what songs go well with others. |

You'd do well to do a bit of research yourself before posting here. the reason being, just as there are more fishing books than all other types of sport PUT TOGETHER (true fact I beleive - look it up!), there are probably more discussions on more boards than any other type of 'hobby' or interest of modern times.
At least get an idea of which direction you want to go in, and then ask for pointers here....... |

Like Oscar said, if you want to make music then you should be looking at production, not DJing.
Start here. |

Yeah, like some of the others here have said, you're looking at production.
To actually correctly produce a track you're going to need two Pioneer cdj-2000's and a Pioneer djm 800 mixer. This combined setup comes with enough wattage and is prebundled with the ultimate vst package. The new cdj-2000's have a color lcd screen so it's easier to produce on them, emits 24bit pluraflops in all digital quality, they produce the best sound as well, and since every club will soon be having this equipment in as standard, it's best to learn on what they have.
It'll be a lot of money down, but it's well-worth it in the end, especially if you want to get into professional production techniques. |

I just found this out for myself this past weekend when I mixed in front of friends live for the first time. Previously, I only had mixed by myself using headphones.
There were a couple instances when I could hear thumping in the headphones due to incomplete beatmatching, but could not hear the thumping coming from the speakers. |
