French Manhattan? I've never had one, but lately I've been a huge fan of Manhattans. I can imagine the french version would be more bitter, more pretentious. that. A perfect manhattan is pretty good as well.
When in comes to whiskey/coke - I think you would consider it a cocktail. I mean, the screwdriver (orange juice + vodka) is considered a cocktail, as is gin 'n tonic. 7 & 7 is a cocktail, scotch & soda is a cocktail as well (so long as you add that twist of lemon peel....)
I'd say, in no specific order...my favorite cocktails would be
Manhattan
Negroni
Brandy Alexander |

IMO, a cocktail should have more than 2 ingredients. |

| currently 'cocktail' denotes "an iced drink of wine or distilled liquor mixed with flavoring ingredients." |

| No. Whiskey and Coke is not a cocktail regardless of definition. |

| I'm relatively certain that a 'jack and coke' is and always has been considered a cocktail. As to whether or not any whiskey and coke is, I'm not all that sure... |

When you go to a restaurant, or a decent bar, and look at their cocktail list, do you ever see "Jack and Coke"? Or Whiskey and Coke? No, you don't.
Or if you do, then you eat in restaurants, and visit bars. |

I was a bartender for years. It's not.
Anyone who insists one is deserves a quick booting out of the place for being an idiot. |
