and correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't 3 sticks of ram more for i7 processors? does it make any difference for other processors? I thought I read something like that somewhere...

the motherboard capitalizt recommended should be enough to last you quite a few years without needing to upgrade the whole system. I feel like you're paying a lot more for stuff that won't justify the improvement of performance.

edit: remember with pc crap there's a huge curve when it comes to pricing. you could get crap almost just as good for almost half the price if you don't buy things that just came out.

Well, I see stuff like this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16883147038

and it's hard to justify spending the same amount or more for something with worse specs. Maybe I'm missing something on the specs side, but it does seem odd at first glance. I mean, why not just buy that HP and gut it?

As for the motherboard, I wouldn't be able to upgrade to an i7, which seems to be the way things are going now. I'm inclined to upgrade that, at the very least. How would the actual performance compare between the one Capitalizt suggested and the i7 I linked?

That computer is $1,200?? that's $400 more than what capitalizt suggested?

I'm just on a 3.0 core 2 duo processor... I have no idea how much better i7 is or anything, nor have I really read up on it.

Go AMD. Any AM3 mobo runs the latest chips, and will also run the next gen 6 core CPU's. Intel is faster, but paying triple the amount for i7 is just dumb. I would buy a core i5 750 if u have to use Intel, and still not be wasting cash. The i5 is faster than AMD's fastest chip...the 965, and equals the i7 920, but u will have to buy new mobo, ram and cpu again when u upgrade.

yeah, personally I wouldn't go for the i7 unless i had tons of cash to blow. it's the new thing from intel so a lot of the money you're paying is going to the fact that it's new. going for something a step below that would be a lot cheaper and really not so much worse.

i don't know about the i7, but typically that's how pc parts are priced.

I built my PC :)

But I have a question about PSUs. I could order from Newegg, but I don't want to. I want to go to Best Buy tomorrow, buy a PSU, slap it in and be ready to roll again.
I have an Antec 300 case, where the PSU is to be mounted at the bottom of the case. Best Buy has a fair selection of 600+watt PSUs. However, all of them have an exhaust that would push hot air into the case.
I only found one that has an exhaust that would push the air directly out of the back of the machine. It's made by Cooler Master, so I really don't want to go that route.

Am I missing something here with this whole ATX 2.2 design?

Odd that any PSU would push air inside. Try this? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...1-035-_-Product

That's the EXACT same one that I got in it right now. However, 500 watts is really pushing the system to the max without overloading. Hence, why my computer probably locked up attempting to play Far Cry 2. It failed to restart twice, although it eventually booted. But I'm barring the computer from games until I can get a bigger PSU.
I went online and searched for pictures of other Antec 300 setups, and many people have a PSU that mounts from the bottom and exhausts straight up onto the graphics card.

Even if I were to put an intake fan on the front of the case, the heat, in my opinion, would sit comfortably in between the graphics card and PSU.

Lots of cases have them mounted in the bottom and some both top and bottom. I don't see you having temperature problems unless you are overclocking your video card already...and even then just get an aftermarket cooler if temps are too high. Why won't you order from Newegg? Do you enjoy getting ripped off from extremely high retail prices?

Here's a great list of PSUs you can consider. I love the site because I have a thing against computer noise.

So, I've already decided on what case & drives I want for the gaming pc I still haven't bought. What I need:

motherboard
cpu
power supply
memory
video card

budget is roughly $800, but flexible. planning on using it for games & Live. it'll be hooked up to 1-2 large monitors (1920) or a 50" plasma.

some notes:
-my sound card is firewire
-I'll only be using 1 optical drive
-I'll have 1-2 internal sata drives, plus 2 external ones
-noise & size may be issues. it's going in an htpc case

What should I buy?

IMO, I would actually go for an i7. I am currently running the top processor released in the core 2 duo line, and my results (even with a gtx280) cannnot really compare to what I would be seeing with an i7 cpu setup. It is worth the money, and you are future-proofing your system, in that you are getting a brand new quad-core platform.

As for PSU, with a single vid card, there is no need for anything more than a 600-650w offering, and in my experience, I would look at Antec. I have builds that are now over 10 years old, still running on the original antec PSU.

So, on the day that the new case showed up, my old computer crapped out. Can't tell if it's a psu or hdd issue, but either way, it won't boot up--just goes through the bios, to the windows loading screen, then reboots...again and again and again.

Anyway, I'm ordering most of the stuff today. For some reason, Newegg doesn't have any of the video card Capitalizt recommended (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16814125294), or any of the better Nvidia cards right now. Does anybody know why that is? I thought those were still considered 'new,' but it also seems to be across the board, with other mfgs, too. Anyway, here's the other stuff I decided on, after some more research:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16820231306
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16817139011

I'm waiting on the PSU to show up before I decide on HDDs. If the ones I already have are fine, I'll just use them and may upgrade the video card, instead. If the drives I have aren't usable, I'll just wait for that GTX260 and get a pair of decent HDDs.

The i5 750 is faster and cheaper than the 920, though u are going LGA 1366 which the next gen's will utilize. So if u only want to upgrade CPU that's a good setup. I like to go ahead and upgrade mobo, ram, and cpu so there are no bottlenecks. As far as HDD's, OCZ has a good SSD out now if u have another drive as storage. My other suggestion is a 150gb Raptor, or one of the WD Green 1TB 64mb cache drives which are blazing fast for 7200rpm.
