Laidback Luke gave me the heads up that he is closing this Dim Mak event last night. Will I Am from the Black Eyed Peas was DJing for most of the night and I must say, he plays good house music! Much props. Sucks LAPD shut the place down around 1:45. Nice setup and speakers. The place was near Boulevard 3/Social on Sunset in Hollywood.
Kinda nice/refreshing to know hip hop DJ's are crossing over to EDM finally in LA! ;)

Wouldn't say I've heard any crossing over; still mostly hip hop with some house mixed in occasionally. As far as producers though, it's definitely heading in that direction - Timbaland, Will I am, pitbull, ludacris... all their latest stuff has huge EDM influences

i'm curious because i see this argument a lot... how does bringing house music into focus to the mainstream hip hop crowd benefit you? more hype means bigger crowds means higher ticket prices means more people copying and repackaging the music you like until it loses distinction (commercialized) and more competing interests on your favorite dj/producer's radar means more chance he will change for the worse. how does this benefit you the club goer? for me i like to be amongst the community of searchers who found the music i like in a simliar way i did. i don't want mtv kids at the same parties as me. i also don't want their naive tastes to become influences on the music and artists i like. not that i'm afraid of that happening, but i would think that would be somewhat of a concern to laidback luke fans.

These stories are always interesting.
I did see the growing convergence of Hip Hop towards EDM about 2-3 years ago. Some were like "wtf...nahhh...not happens" ::feather into the hat::
Rich all it means is more fans and patrons for the EDM clubs and music, which means more clubs and people going through the EDM education process, to one day end up like uncle Rich.
Because its likely you were into commercialized music at one point as well. Unless you were you born an underground techno,house,deep house head? Lets be real, before the internet most people grew up on MTV, Radio, and what their parents listened to (luckily they listened to some good .) These people are just at a different place and time, and maybe they will get to where you are.
And if you dont want MTV kids at your club, no worries because the growth in EDM interest means, naturally a club will have to open up for your underground needs, and there already examples of that. Think over the causes and effects.

my own journey to this point is irrelevant to the question i posed, which is: how does more people at the clubs benefit you? is it the uncomfortable crowding amongst less similiarly minded patrons that appeals to you, the longer lines, or the higher booking fees and resulting cover charges? why does more mainstream people around make the experience better for you? would adding a pitbull to your favorite dj booking make the experience better because of all the extra mainstream appeal pitbull brings to the night? to take it further, how does popularization of your favorite music amongst a more mainstream demographic benefit the course of your favorite music's evolution? these are questions i suspect the "i'm so happy edm is getting all this mainstream exposure" people haven't thought through.

I already answered your posed question. Why is history irrelevant when you are holding these people to your standard? Where did your standard come from or start. If your ignoring your history and carrying on with your views, it is ironic and hypocritcal to ask these people to be different from you, even though at some point you were exactly where they are. Or were you born a golden underground child with a wharehouse in your backyard?
And your logic that more people means higher price is off, because more people buying the same goods, typically means lower pricing coupled with more outlets. One of them most likely will be an empty underground room with plenty of elbow space for you. Your idealism/belief system is holding you back...i'd retreat and find a more logic based angle.

Basically, (at least in LA) the better crowd/funner/classier good looking individuals flock to hip hop...they just don't know better, so to stick em with some house, they in turn enjoy it and start listening to more.
However I'm sure Rich enjoys a party full of swords.
