is it to learn acoustic guitar? I've tried to pick up bass long long ago, so I have a very crude understanding of how a guitar works.

Lately, I've been getting all these great idea's of songs in my head (and I have a basic mastery of reading/writing music) but I can't exactly put it into song without the proper tools. So I've decided to teach myself to play acoustic guitar,

so, those of you guitar junkies/veterans any tips/pointers? Also, if anyone has any suggestions as to the brand of acoustic to pick up that'd be more than welcome.

Please bear in mind that I don't work because I'm just like that and I don't have all that much money (part of the reason why I'm teaching myself after all) but I don't care about that stuff, I just want to make music.

Suggestions, points, advice, anything?

get the most expensive guitar you can find, and then coat it in butter.

Internet has a ton of resources on learn how to play guitar. But imo, it's better to have a friend teach you the basic chords. You can see/hear how to correctly play that way.

That's how my ex taught me on a Washburn acoustic guitar I bought.

Gave up on guitar years ago though and leave the music making to those with talent. :o

It is pretty easy to learn if you have someone teaching you. My gf has been sitting down with me once a week, and i have managed to pick it up pretty good, albeit i am nowhere near her caliber yet.

As far as brands, don't cheap out...those cheap ass acoustic guitars you see at department stores never stay in tune. Alvarez makes good classical and acoustic guitars at a decent price. That is what i have, but i barely use it as i prefer playting my gf's Epiphone.

I found classical guitar (nylon strings) to be much less painful.

Metal strings are much brighter, though.

In any case, guitar has a lot of steep learning curves & can be very frustrating. I taught myself and developed a lot of bad techniques so if you intend to master the instrument, find a good teacher.

Of course, it's pretty easy to just bash out some simple chords.

Main bit of advice: practise right hand technique before learning tons of advanced left-hand stuff. When you are first starting out, spend an hour or more each day playing the basics until you are very confident.

If you get frustrated, put it down for a couple days and then come back. You should always enjoy playing.

the pain goes away once you develop a callus, quit being a ...nylon strings suck:p

also these should be among the first things you learn imo.
