Made in z3ta

pop 1 High oct Sine fast pitch decay
thunk 1 Mid oct sine Fast pitch decay
Boom 1 Low octave sine slower pitch decay

Then compressed using wanes api 2500 compressor

thresh -4 attack 3ms release -1ms ratio 3:1

Funny thing is i know about rooms making things sound diff but if im in one spot it sounds sweet then another totally e?

Any good in your phones? room? car?

that high pitch bend makes it sound like a lazer gun, not a kick drum. I hope you didn't waste too much time on making that.
Sonic_c
ha about an hour! ah well tips anyone?
RichieV
well

my first tip would be stop focusing so much attention on so little. Use a sample or blend samples. IT just seems like so much effort to do something someone has done better. Like building your own synth just to make a song. If it is a hobby, then I suppose have at it but man, that was one hour ill spent.

was just something to do while i chilled with a beer. interested to know is all.

Hmm, I really don't like it that much honestly.

It just doesn't really sound "dynamic". Its hard to explain the sound but a lot of times I'll resonate a kick around 125-150hz around 7 or 8db just to see what the sweet spot sounds like when its being pushed.

On this kick that sweet spot sounds very flat. It hits like a flat hammer. You have the click around 5k, then the bass starts around 200hz and under. But there is almost nothing in between those regions. This breaks the uniformity of the kick, making it sound more like 2 seperate sounds (I know you have 3) rather then 1. Its like a click on top of a flat bassy region, more then 1 dynamic sound.

I like kicks where the bass region is rounder. Where the delay from the 200hz region to the 50hz region is slower.
Looking at it I can see you have a notable delay, but it still happens so quick that it sounds flat rather then round. Maybe you set the pitch bend too high like Richie said. But my issue isn't the laser sound, its just the flat region of bass when it hits. You may like that though idk. I just like my kicks to slam then push, this one just kinda slams.

Ive had my share with kicks, and let me tell you that a good kick sample usually comes from a clear sine and careful pitch envelope, other than that its personal preferences, i use soundforge for my kicks, each time i pitch bend i cut off all the 22,050 cycles in the beginning (the ones that make that annoying "tsew" sound) i cut them to the highest point on the next cycle (to get the desired "click" effect), usually i limit them with an aggressive limiter (to add some harmonies to the bass), maybe some reverb/distortion to get it all nice and thumpy... the thing is later i might add in the actual track layers of that kick to create a suitable sound, but a lot of the times i stick around with what is already there, here is a kick i made, no eqing yet, i do that on the project itself

I made this kick and bass last night using my Moog Rogue.

Any good? (note I have'nt done much composition on this yet).

The kick is using resonance going through the filter envelope, then beefed up some in the DAW with careful reverb (rule break) and valve simulation.

The bass I played by hand and then snipped the best bits of audio and glue them together. I like the unquantised feel of the bass myself.

EDIT - NEW LINK - instant play

Track 1 223kbps.mp3 - 3.75MB

Richard, I like the bass and the feel of it.
Sometimes a kick can benefit a lot from just added Early reflection (no tail).

I also agree with Vortex that the beginning cycles have to be cut if you're not specifically looking for a crazy laser goa kick.

thats a million times better than mine sounds like what i was going for, run me through what you did?

Vortex_SA
started with a 35 hz sine, something like 5 pitch bends with slightly different envelopes each time, to taste, cutting down the first cycles to the highest/lowest point of the first cycle below 22,050, a little bit of reverb with no early reflections, some saturation and thats it... the difficult thing is to find a good pitch envelope, after that you are good to go wherever actually...
Sonic_c
This is gonna sound dumb, on the z3ta it only has one pitch envelope so without using the normal egs which arnt great for pitch will i need an audio editing thing like soundforge if i want to do this?

nb: Its ok the normal egs are fine
