I'm not sure what happened at this specific site, but in general after the "Dot Bomb" meltdown a lot of free sites or ones that depend on ad revenue have closed shop. I'm now keenly aware that nothing is for free, yes even on the Web!

Hey,

I'm Adam - it was Phantasy and I that originally ran Shaddup and Dance, and though this thread is probably long extinct, it can't hurt to have somewhere on the net that has a semi-accurate account of what happened.

Initially when we started out, we were just out to create a community for people that loved dancing, be it liquid, house stepping, breaking, popping, whatever.

Things were great, and bandwidth wasn't much of an issue - we were too small. However, as word got around and our community grew, we started to hit some roadblocks. We had a (IMO) pretty decent collection of clips, including a few that were exclusive to our site - I believe that Phantasy had gotten one from Mr. Wiggles of the Electric Boogaloos after helping him out a little when he was first setting up his own site (I believe he's now at www.mrwiggleshiphop.net, though I'm not sure).

As this trend continued, we ended up with some pretty big bandwidth issues. Both Dave (Phantasy) and I were going to school, and so we didn't have a lot of money to devote to the site. In addition to that, we had to devote a lot of spare time to fighting people that were directly linking to our videos (Big Boogaloo Will was a constant thorn in our side), and with increased forum usage, it was taking up more and more of my time to keep things civil, and keep out spam (I was deleting messages from the two guys over at www.wavedance.com on a daily basis). On top of all that, the bandwidth usage we were coming up against were becoming huge. Hosting all of the videos we had started to take a toll, and even the people that were generous enough to give us free bandwidth and webspace were getting crushed from our traffic. The person that was kind enough to host the Wiggles video (I wish I could remember their name), got smoked with over a gigabyte of bandwidth the first night we had it put up.

All of this took away from what Dave and I had as our initial purpose - running a site that let everyone else share in the same love we had for dancing.

As things got more and more political in the forums, I was experiencing more and more pressure at school. Eventually, as much as I hated to do it, I had to step down - I no longer had time to be an administrator for the forums, and I couldn't contribute to the site any longer. Shortly after, I think AcidFiend took up moderation of most of the forums, along with Phantasy. Gradually after that, I think things just wound down on their own. More and more quality dance sites were created (www.freestylesessions.com, www.style2ouf.net, www.mrwiggleshiphop.net, etc.) and we just couldn't keep up the pace, especially considering the cost to host the kind of traffic we were dealing with.

All in all, Phantasy and I both had an awesome time running the site when it was up - I had wanted to run a dance website for a long time beforehand, and when Phantasy and I finally sorted things out, we were thrilled to just be running our own tiny low traffic website, even if it only had about 20 regular visitors. We were shocked that the site became as succseful as it did, and to this day I think it's fair to say that it holds a special place in our hearts.

Massive thanks to everyone that supported us in the good old days - especially to the awesome (and very talented) guys at LPC.
