YO!

so, i'm trying to sell my TI in order to upgrade my monitors from krk rokit 6s...

options for upgrades at the moment are:

yamaha hs80s ~aud450 each
genelec 8020b ~aud 650 each
dynaudio bm5a ~aud1700 pair

they're all different sizes as i know, but i'm in a relatively small, untreated square room... the rokit 6s do a great job volume-wise in here, and i will eventually invest in some bass-traps etc, but not yet...

i pretty much assumed when i was going to upgrade i'd go the yamahas as they get great reviews, and are great value for money in aus, but wondering if it's worth going up a level again...? and also, if getting the tiny genelecs is a completely horrible idea, since generally genelec's get pretty good reviews...?

cheers :)

Hey will you be selling your rockits? Are they still in decent shape? Let me know if you plan on keeping them thanks.

Heres' my take (and this is based on my experience with the following not specs):

1, Great response all over and full spectrum. These are becoming the "go to: monitors of this generation. IMO, these are what the HR824 (mk1) were 10 years ago. Only downside is they boom badly in small spaces, so if you're in limited space and have no treatment, you;re going to have trouble with low freq on these.

2, Very clear but slightly imbalanced due to their size and lack of bass response. I like them for sound design but not for mixing.
3, I really like the BM5's (moreso than the BM6's which are bass heavy) and their detail is stunning and even though they are not bright, again there is something missing in the low end, which really annoys me as they would be perfect otherwise.

My advice is to go for the HS80's - you will hear a marked upgrade over your KRK's in both flatness and clarity of overall spectrum but especially the bass.

If you're on a tight budget or have a small listening environment, find a pair of JBL LSR 2335p. I can honestly say I have never heard a set of 5" drivers perform that well, and they sound "big" in a small space without booming and without treatment. Very cheap at $400 per pair.

So, if you've got space go for the HS80's if not go for 2325p's.

DJ RANN:

Do you or anyone else have something to say about these monitors:

Alesis M1 MK2

I really like them a lot, been using them for so long now that i dont know if i dare to buy a new pair in case i like them less or that they dont improve my mixing.

thanks Rann, i was hoping you would respond here :D

it looks like the hs80s are the way to go, can perhaps invest the extra 900 or so i'll save in some treatment or something too... :)

oh and robby i most likely will try and sell them, but i live in australia and they're heavy bastards so would probably not be worth sending them to the US as they're relatively cheap monitors anyway... :)

What are the dimensions of your room? If its square as you say then prepare to spend plenty on bass traps!

I've got a pair of Mackie HR824 MK2 and I'm extremely happy with them. Upgraded from Adam A5's and theres a world of difference. They are not expensive for the quality they deliver, they translate very very well, they've got a ton of accurate bass response, which is very valuable for electronica. Thats thanks to the fact that they are not ported, so they do not introduce any bass lumps in the lower end.

The HS80's are great - but If you've got another 900 to spend you've got to be getting close to focal twins money (although I have no idea what the cost is in Aus).

As for room treatment, no, DON'T do it first before monitor upgrade.

How on earth are you going to be able to tell how you need to adjust the room to if you don't have the exact speakers and can adjust accordingly?

Yes, the room can help decide which monitors to go for (as per my earlier post of the JBL's for a small space and HS80's for a larger etc.), but you don't "fix" the room before you have monitors (unless you're building the space from scratch and have total control over materials, room design, placement etc.).

I'd like to know what else you've got in your signal chain, as that spare 900 could be much more effectively spent on other things before you have to get in to room treatment.

I remember when they first came out, they were actually the monitors we had as the equipment test speakers when I did tech support many moons ago (nearly a decade).

When I first heard them I have to admit I wasn't a huge fan at all, but I learnt to adjust to them and found you could use them without too much translation. They're not "bad" monitors, just not what i would call great. Exactly the opposite happened to me with KRK's (all of them) which when I first heard I thought we're *OK* but as I got more more proficient at hearing and engineering, have grown to loath them over time.

I do feel that things have moved on from the M1Mk2's and they have been surpassed in their price bracket by other monitors over the last few years. If you're happy and getting good results then there's the argument of "why fix it" but I think if you're getting good results on them then you'd be getting even better results on other, better monitors.

My HS 80's boom in my smallish room. It's quite annoying indeed, but I still love them. However, only the highs/mids are treated in my room.
