Thanks everyone for the warm welcome, wasn't expecting quite that response.. i must be jaded from years of seeing little other than flame wars on forums lol
Thought i'd save my reply till i could fulfill my intention of upping my current project to soundcloud.
I'm not in love with it, but i think it's a reasonable effort.
http://soundcloud.com/tomportas/subsequence
It's at the stage where i've done lots of revisions and tinkering, but have only exported it once and had a listen on one other system.. so i'd like to take onboard any critique and possibly do some more revisions, then try and approach some kind of mastering process.
All i've done so far is group a few synths, drums and bass channels through to separate ozone instances and selected an appropriate preset basically. My thoughts when listening on my hi-fi at home were that i need to add some panning and some more stereo width somehow + the intensity of the some of the sounds is a bit dull perhaps. If you have a sub the low end might be overdone too i'm not sure, i mixed it without a sub and was trying to get some pumping low end presence.
If people are interested i'll upload a track later that is about a year old which is kinda my favourite, it doesn't have the production that this tune does but it has more energy and a stronger melody i think. I'd like to feel like i've come along way in a year but it's hard to believe it when my favourite track is 12 months old lol. |

To quote MC Flipside... Hi friend.
Stick to the Production Studio and the Music Producers Promotion sub forums, and you'll see far less in the way of flame wars. |

quick bump, i created a soundcloud page (link above) with 2 of my tunes on it, doesn't look like it's had any plays/comments yet.. if just half of you nice people who welcomed me would have a listen and tell me even one thing you like/dislike about atleast my current project, it would be a great help to me before attempting the next step of refining and mastering it.
I'd rather people ripped my tunes apart with criticism than said nothing.. lol |

good stuff man, listening to subsequence
im listening to subsequence, sound is phat and i dont hear any major techinal flaws (production wise) (im listening on so-so speakers though, but still...)
however I was kinda waiting for more on the breakdown, all those epic trance sounds had me waiting for an epic climax, felt a little weak
maybe you couldve tweaked the lead to make brighter and punchier...just an idea
keep it up, maybe post in the Music Producers Promotion forum for purely critique threads |

agree.
i really like it :)
very nice melody and key progressions, and percussion sounds pretty cool, and changes enough too :)
the sounds seem to fit, and go together well etc :)
and if i didn't like it i would rip it apart, don't worry :p
also, i like that the breakdown isn't too big... epic breakdowns are outdated imo! :p
edit: listened to angelus too: the sounds you're making are pretty good, and the mixing is pretty tight as well mate! good work :)
the style is one i'm a bit sick of, and there's nothing entirely original there, if i was being very critical, but it's not entirely a rip-off of existing tracks either, and creating a 'trance' track is always going to sound a bit unoriginal...
i say keep at it, you're doing well :) |

thanks guys, appreciated! Good to know i'm doing something right.. lol
The Angelus basically has no processing on it, it was done on my old PC which didn't have the grunt to run a lot of plugins at once, most of the tracks had to be frozen and it got difficult to load the project towards the end. I think the lead is too loud in the mix and a bit of a shock when it comes in, and the drums are a bit flat and lifeless. Plus i kind of digressed halfway through the tune and probably should have focussed more on the piano melody in the first half, which i think is the highlight of the tune. In fact i went back to study piano recently because i was frustrated that i hadn't really come up with anything that rivals it since!
Conversely, Subsequence has quite a bit of processing on it (new PC, plenty of grunt). Sidechain compression used on a lot of the tracks, and two ozone instances to brighten up the synths and drums. I'm still learning the ropes in the processing/mixing respect so still looking for idea's and other things to try.
but yeah it's a much slower tune, i just didn't want to pigeon hole myself into the fast stuff, and it was good to work on something different. Next tune will be back in the 140's tho i think, where the passion is ;) |
