Whats up everyone. Recently my tc electronics konnect 8 fire wire sound card has been clipping all the time....it has been a piece of since i bought it and dont recommend it to anyone. but anyways i want to buy a new one..i only need it for great sound clarity and 1 port for midi and mic. range is $300 what are your guy's recommendations?
Keep in mind. I need one from a good company and that is reliable with good firmware that wont crash.

Echo audiofire4 - best card under $400 period. decent pre's and solid as a rock. |

I'm sorry but I've heard nothing but good on the TC Konnekt series from a lot of people. How about you just turn the volume down on the instrument you are recording? And if that doesn't work why didn't you contact the shop, because then it would seem as if the input is broken.
And otherwise I would definitely recommend Echo soundcards as well as mister Rann, I own an Echo Audiofire12 myself and it's hot :) |

and there's very little difference between the AF4 and the FF400 apart from I/O - the sonic quality is a minute bit better on the FF400 but that's simply because of it's internal clock...but no way in hell it's worth shelling out the extra $600 for it over the excellent AF4. |

Is there much difference in sound quality between the RME FF800 and the Audiofire offerings?
I know the AF400 has that firewire vulnerability where it can completely melt if you disconnect it while the RME stuff doesn't... |

At this level the differences are really quite small and unless you've got great monitors and at least a semi treated room, you're not going to hear the difference. Having said that, the difference is there if the rest of your setup can accomodate the 800. It just sounds so detailed crisp, without being harsh.
I love my AF4 - hionestly one of the best purchases I've made and simply staggering value once you hear the quality.
The FF800 is a superb interface. We have about 5 at the studio for edit rigs.
AFAIK, the top of the range ECHO AF's use the same chips as the FF800 but the 800 is a better sounding unit because of the internal clocks. In fact the RME's clock is that good that I'd have not problem using it as the master clock in studio setting.
The FF800 does not have the problem associated with FW bridge burnout becuase I can't be bus powered, but tbh, there's hardly any problems with the echo AF4 (upwards, not the AF2) and even less with the RME FF400.
There were some compatibilty problems with some RME units made before July 2006, but that was rare anyway and unless you're buying an old unit that has no chance of happening to you.
My personal feelings are go for an audiofire but if you've got the extra money, go for a FF800. I woulnd't bother with the FF400 as it's so close to the AF's in terms of quality but nearly the price of the FF800. |
