You've all been to a rave!
Just because it is not what it once was, and you had to break into a warehouse, find eggs, get maps, run from cops, etc... doesn't meant it's not a rave.
Rave is an idea, a mentality, a gathering...
Sure things have changed over the years since the first "Raves", laws, regulations, popularity, music, sound... there are plenty of raves going on with the same fundementals of "rave" and what it was intended to be.
Think of any party at any club you've been to recently where you were surrounded by friends, met new and amazing people, people had fun and danced without care, the music was unique, new and intense. People took care of one another, the crowd felt in touch with the DJ's music, the DJ connected with the crowd. The place, people, dj's and the air had a certain vibe to it. It went on for hours (or seemed to), the best time you've had in a while, and no one wanted it to stop... it was hot and you didn't care, it was loud and you didn't care, it was late, real late and you didn't care... everyone talked about it for a few days/weeks/months after and you still probably talk about it sometimes with new made friends you met there...
