Do you have Kontakt? If not, I'd recommend going that route and picking up some of the better libraries out there. I have a lot of guitar sample libraries and I looked long and hard to find some convincing ones - IMO you won't find many that are convincing unless you go the sampler route.
Are you looking for acoustic or electric guitar sounds? Also, what style of playing - chords, solos, picked vs. fingerpicked vs. strummed, etc.? If you can provide some specifics, I can recommend some very good libraries. |

If you have Kontakt, I would suggest checking out the Pettinhouse guitar libraries, particularly Direct Guitar, which I think is the most flexible. If you happen to have Komplete, then you also have Guitar Rig and, when you combine these guitar samples in Kontakt with GR, you'll have lead guitars covered for almost any need. Oh yeah, be sure to watch some of the videos on their website to see/hear these samples in action - you'll probably be shocked!
For even cheaper Kontakt guitar libraries, check out the Indiginus $5 sample libraries. Again, if you can run these through something like Guitar Rig or Amplitube or any other guitar rack/amp modeler, you can get very good results.
Last, but not least, if you have Nexus, the Guitars expansion has some pretty good leads in it. You can hear a sample of one of the leads by clicking on my myspace link below and listening to song #13 (Wanderlust) - all the lead guitar parts were created by stripping away all the Nexus effects, running the guitar through Guitar Rig, and applying a little pitch bend on the transients (highly recommended tip for making guitar samples sound more realistic).

Yeah, I wouldn't bother with VSTs. Buy a guitar and learn it, its quicker and easier in the long run. |

While I definitely agree that learning guitar is a better option in the long run and will lead to better musicianship, I totally disagree that it's quicker and easier than using Kontakt and a good sample library (which is also a cheaper option in this case since the OP has Kontakt already). It takes months or (more likely) years to become proficient enough at guitar to get the results that most of us are used to and demand from our productions, whereas it only takes a few hours max to get a good sample library sounding the way you want it. Few people are going to see putting a song that they are trying to finish on hold for a few years until they can buy and learn to play guitar at the same level of proficiency as their production skills as a practical solution. Of course, some may see this as cheating, others don't, others (like myself) don't give a rat's ass.
Of course, another option is to get a guitarist friend to play the parts, or run an ad on craigslist looking for a guitarist. |

Yeah, I'd say it takes about three weeks, which, by the time your sample library's shipped, is only a week extra. (sorry, thats assuming you live in australia obviously...)
Sure, profieciency takes years, but you really don't need to be proficient for most EDM related purposes. Its not like most edm guitar parts are classical gas - which incidentally, was the first full song I learnt, and I learnt it in a month. |
