Oh yea - one more - ROLAND JD-800 - monstaa!!! - about $600.

If you need some head-f*ck FM synth - go for Yamaha FS1R

I always regret selling my Waldorf pulse and they are cheap. Seems like you could use a nice monophonic synth!
Subtle
Moog Phatty :o

Nord Lead 3s are a quite a common on ebay . link

Yeah, I posted a little demo of NL3 few years ago. Standard disclaimer: Please forgive any playing mistakes - no sequencer was used - just recorder straight in Soundforge. File is 18MB! NO FX, nothing but NL3.

Here's a description of sections:

1. JaPan LFOarp - no arp, just lfo and some fm synth to create "arp" feel with lfo 2 controlling panning and create detuning

2. Fripp-ish - clav sound to reflect nylon/steel gutar or clav (depending on how you feel)

3. 3rd Pad from the sun - filter is controlled by LFo1 with some FM for de-tuning, towards the end amp attack and filter are tweaked

4. Out_Z_blue Pad - Soft pad (somewhat drone-y) with cool vibra-bell-like upper octave sound (no splits).

5. LFO pad - low register creates LFO-controlled "peow peow peow" type of sound, upper register has ring mod sound to it

6. NoLFODelay - patch uses no arp or FX, delay-ish type of sound is produced by LFO1

7. SolarFlare - again, detuned pad with LFO controlling the beating and filter

8. Ba$$Line - 80's euro style bassline with arp

9. Moogish - Moog-like lead/bass patch with some mod wheel for "vibrato" effect

10. H2O Communication - piano-like sound with some delay-like filter

11. Comet Pad - pad with sort of icicle-drops in the background

depends on what you're after. if it is to add some spice to your track - those are pretty good tools. If you are looking for another tweakfest, probably not.

I'd like a machinedrum personally... They have some pretty bonecrushing sounds...

Machinedrum - another underwhelmng and overpriced piece of fail. For the money- nothing is close in terms of features and flexibility to Maschine. Yeah I know it's software based but it has been unbelievably quick and easy to put somethng together and it's quality sounding.

Machinedrum, on the other hand:
-steep learning curve if you're not familiar with drum programming

-red display has you seeing red everywhere after 5 mins

-knobs are too close, too slipery, too fragile, break easy

-pads are too wobbly, too noisy, too flimsy

-support sucks. Repair took over 4 months - tech's relative died, I was told. Someone else said they got same excuse at a different time. So, unless tech's family undergoing some serious dying-off, Expect bull as part of the service plan.

-overpriced, doesn't hold resale value well.

-limited features and Poor value for the money

I'd say if it was $200 and you wanted a toy to play with and sell later without breaking the bank - go for it. Anything more than that and it's throwing money away.

er, yeah, except that maschine is sample based not synthesis based, which is a pretty relevant difference wouldn't you say?

Based on what I've seen it seems to resell very well actually, but I haven't checked the build quality, so maybe your right on that.

Maschine is software mostly - true. But it is the First piece of drum kit I actually started to use, not let it sit collecting dust. It has been very inspirational and easy to use - very intuitive to get a groove going. You can tweak the crap out of the sound or throw your own in.

And btw - most drum machines are software sample based.
kitphillips
I wasn't making any comment about it being software based. I was saying that you were comparing apples to oranges by comparing a drum synth with an AKAI-alike sample workstation. Thats like comparing a virus to a triton, it makes no sense. But yes, it is also software, hence another reason why it is an orange (or more a lemon from what I hear).

And yes, I'm aware that most drums are sampled, which is why the machinedrum is awesome, because its so unique.

Anyway @ the OP, having reread your original post, I'd think that you'd want something a bit left field, so I wouldn't even think about going for some bog standard VA, unless it were a nord, because it sounds quite different to the virus or micro Q.

Much as the idea of a jupiter/juno is appealing, I doubt it'll sound that much different to your andromeda, so you've probably got the polyphonic analogue side of things covered.

The prophet 08 is probably similar to the andromeda, so I'd avoid that and maybe look at the evolver, since it's got a more unique concept. Otherwise, I'd look at a spectralis, machinedrum, roland V synth, or maybe a workstation type thing like the roland phantom, korg m3/triton, something like that.

No point covering ground you already have with more synths that sound similar IMO.
