Yeah but she seems like she's dropped composing in a DAW and writes the midi in hardware step sequencers. Frankly shes just tracking her external kit in protools which makes sense, as it's great for audio, a bit scud for midi. |

| I love Reason (been using it for 7 years now, and i never get tired of it) but if u ever plan on using any hardware you might as well just learn a different prog. id go for Ableton caus its both platforms and have some awesome live functions, which im trying to learn atm. Reason is also both platforms btw so if ur a software dude u can always use Reason and Ableton together. havent tried it myself though. |

| Actually since version 8 I think ProTools has stepped up in the MIDI department...It's a little clumsy for me though, just because I often confuse the toolbar of the MIDI window with the Edit window, but that's just me :clown: |

It's better but still no where close to logic or cubases offerings. |

reason is kinda a self contained everything in one box sorta program, if I already had some piece of hardware I did all my work on, I figure the best thing about adding reason onto that would be the new pack of instruments to play with. You probably don't wan't to do all your recording and mixing and stuff inside the thing, it seems like it would be great if one wanted to make tracks with just one single thing to buy, and there are ways to hook it up to external stuffs, but I dunno.
fruity is ok probably for hooking up the thing you already have to it and adding its power to the it, but it really isn't all that much power compared to the board I imagine. You'll get the ability to host plugins and route stuff all over the place and record and all that though, which is what you are wanting I imagine, reason can also do alot of that though.
limited to only those things, and already having an environment that works for everything you are doing and just wanting to expand on it, that seems like a tricky decision, both of them come with new sounds and generators and effects to use, reasons are probably better, both have all sorts of ways to do signal routing and plugins and , for that fruity is probably better by a little bit, it depends on what one wants I guess.
I like renoise for reasons I can't quite explain, I used to do fruity, and before that I did buzz, ableton looks very tempting, I havent bought it yet but I did get a book about it. |

recording obviously, because you cant.(unless you get record which is pretty cheap) but mixing? why not? there are pros that use it solely for mixing, and sometimes dont even touch anything else. |

If they guy's got a triton, I'd say maybe reaper would be a good option, that way he can decide whether he likes computer sequencing or if he prefers hardware... if the latter, then at least he has a good platform for mastering and editing.
Maybe download a copy of the ableton demo, or the sonar one? Cubase, sonar, logic are all really variations on a theme, so if you like the demo on one, you'll like them all. Ableton's a bit different.
I'd advise against reason or fruity. |

I know, bit if flame bait there, but seriously speaking, nearly every person that I know who "made it" (had a major release, or got signed, or quit their day job becuase music was now paying the rent etc.) on FL or reason either switched to logic or cubase or sonar at some point.
In fairness ableton has a strong pro following but it pales in comparison to the number of professional composers and producers that are cubase or logic users.
An example is I remember everyone having such a boner over Joel (the Mau5) using FL for major releases and how they too felt some kind of validation for using FL and then the subsequent fallout when it was discovered he switched to logic.
Just saying that reason and FL have their place but in my experience, most people graduate (and that's how they describe it) to something else. |
This. I use ableton and I love it. But I definitely want to try logic if/when I get a Mac. |

| If you use Triton extensively, you'd probably like your DAW to be able to record. I'd say Cubase or Sonar on Windows platform. |
