Hi there, am i right in thinkin the 3rd, 6th and 7th degrees in a minor chord are flattened compared to the major chord? and am i right in thinkin the 6th and 7th degree of a melodic mminor chord are the same as a major chord when playing down the scale ?
any answers are greatly appreciated, cheers |

Flat 3rd minor
|C D Eb F G A B| - C minor scale
Flat 3rd and 6th Harmonic minor
|C D Eb F G Ab B| - C harmonic minor scale
Flat 3rd 6th and 7th is natural minor
|C D Eb F G Ab Bb| - C natural minor scale
But your talking about scales not chords. In a chord it is whether the 3rd is is a major third from the root or a minor third from the root notes that decides if its a minor chord.
C > E major 3rd (the distance between C & E is two whole tones)
C > Eb Minor third (the distance between C & Eb is one and a half tones)
So |C E G| C major
and |C Eb G| C minor
What your talking about is certain styles of music play the flats on the way up the scale and the naturals on the way down. Minors are quite interchangeable. My music teacher often borrows a chord from the natural minor scale when working in the harmonic minor for instance and it sounds great. |

just a correction to what Sonic said
minor scale is typically the natural minor scale.
The one with raised 6 and 7 is called melodic minor. The reason being that the raised 6th comes about by avoiding an augmented 2nd you get with the harmonic minor.
The harmonic minor as the name implies has to do with the use of the dominant V chord instead of minor V. |
