I'm looking for this type of 'dark' psy trance (not the genre 'dark-psy' though), but modern. I'm hearing a lot of great progressive stuff lately, but not much great full on banging stuff.
So basically, its heads down, atmospheric and very energetic, but it never tries to be too clever during the breakdowns. That's the problem I'm finding with full-on at the moment - it will often have a good idea, but then throw in a load of unnecessary quirky noises on or just after the breakdown, which ends up making it sounds tacky and naff (imo).
Also, ideally I'd like to be able to buy it on a legal download site rather than have to buy an album off psy-shop
Any help will be greatly appreciated :)

Cheers mate. I am a big fan of 'the prayer'. The other ones weren't to my tastes at all unfortunately, but I suppose that's personal tastes for you. Thanks very much for the suggestions :)
Let me know if this isn't your style, and I will come up with other recommendations.

"Heads down" stuff; you've been chatting to J00F too much!
For full-on, try Headroom, Zen Mechanics, Dickster, Fearsome Engine, Cosmosis, Tristan, Burn In Noise, Fatali, Tactic Mind, Dark Soho and Domestic. You may also like PTX as his stuff is very similar to X&I's, except I find it to contain a lot of those quirky, unnecessary noises you were talking about. I'm sure you already have the 00.db album too. Infected Mushroom is also probably too obvious a suggestion for you.
For progressive, there's not a great deal of 'dark' stuff available. Nasa, Ticon (everything before the [2am] album), Symphonix, Anton Chernikov and his Crystal Verge alias. Human Blue has a few melodic yet dark-ish tracks too.

IMO this guy Ital is one of the more interesting artists producing full on right now. Check it out.

Actually, the link in my sig features dark prog-psy, and you're right, hardly anyone makes it. It's a bit of a weird genre, the psygressive sounds are a lot different than those of Human Blue and Symphonix. They have a bit more of a progressive style with a dark atmosphere, but not as many weird noises as artists like Minimal Criminal, Sensient, and Tetrameth :p
