Hey guys

Recently moved to Surfers and hit up a few clubs in the "club district"... Are there any clubs that play decent house, trance, even dnb :). Anything with a good beat and not top40 :)

Greatly appreciated.

I would also like to know this lol

All I know is there is allegedly a club in Brisbane called Family or something that plays trance. Allegedly!

I was at Melbas a few nights ago and at about 3am they played a good half an hour of remixed top40 songs... Thats the closest I got so far to edm :)))))

For a city this big and as lively... I'm surprised there is absolutely nothing.

You're probably out of luck. Surfers and the Gold Coast are like Australia's version of Las Vegas; they're all glitz and glamour, but very little culture.

I have no idea what they play there, but check out this place's website:

As for Family in Brisbane, I've heard it's a great club. They've had progressive house, trance, and deep house DJs there over the years. You probably wouldn't go wrong with that.

Check inthemix.com.au for events in your area.

Yeah, Surfers kind of sucks lol.

I'd recommend coming up to Brisbane for a decent clubbing night. Check inthemix.com.au for events/dj listings, or grab a copy of Scene Magazine (free street press, mostly focused on EDM/clubbing).

Don't bother with Surfers.

I'm out almost every weekend. Depending on the type of genre you like, Brisbane has a few clubs that cater for EDM people such as yourself & me.

The Family on a Saturday night in the top room (UNCLE is what it's called) plays a good mix of tech and prog house with a bit of tech trance and also minimal (not the same DJ but the different resident and non-resident DJs spin that type of EDM).

Hernan Cattaneo's favourite gig of 2009 was actually his set at The Family in that same room. He's quoted saying that in the DJ Mag 100 poll thing. I know it's a e poll but his set there has been one of my highlights. I also was fortunate enough to see Henry Saiz spin there as he warmed up for Chris Healings (Hybrid). Another notable DJ i've seen in that room is Pole Folder.

There's also the Empire which is a few clubs near The Family and once again they got this 1 room which is usually tech house and/or dubstep. That place always has some good international talent very often, recently saw Jody Wisternoff there, and also Robert Babicz. I think Henry Saiz is spinning there this weekend.

Then there's this wicked lounge/bar a few blocks down from the valley called Barsoma (near Fringe bar which a lot of ppl know) and Barsoma on a Friday night is awesome as they play a wide range of house music but none of your cheesy commercial crap, it's usually a good mix of progressive and deep house. Seeing Gui Boratto there soon. A few months ago saw Will Saul spin there.

So yeah, basically you have The Family, Empire and Barsoma. Check them out. Let me know what you think.

Gold Coast - great beaches, but oh so tacky

Tacky chic

Next time I am over in Bris I have to check those places out djscitec, thanks!

No worries. Happy to help.

Apparently Hernan Cattaneo's gig on a boat on the Brisbane River sold out in a day. 140 ppl, on a boat, listening to Hernan for 4hrs will be insane in April.. managed to get a ticket.

It's the same day as Liberate which is on at a club called Planet, so i'll be at 1-5pm with Hernan on the boat, then get over to Planet for Eddie Halliwell, Matt Hardwick etc.

I might start posting a bit more Brisbane event things here just if people need to find out about some decent events/club nights happening.

Thx alot guys for all the input..

I miss going to places with good music but it's still a pretty great city.

Going to have to arrange a trip down to Brisbane as per djscitec.

Check out a krew called 'Involved'. They run events in and around surfers paradise.
Iv played at a few of their events and they've all been quality. They have an upcoming boat party, which is set to be fantastic. Jump on a boat, takes you to an island, party on all day, back on the boat which takes you to a night club on the wharf. Great day.

Check their group on facebook:

Went to the gold coast in Feb for a holiday, checked out a new night called Hedonism Saturdays at a club called east (the night only started in January this year).

It is a fancy restaurant that turns into a club around 9:30-10pm, we ate dinner there and it was delicious (so were the cocktails), service was great, but don't expect it to be cheap! Anyway around 8:30 they had a live singer (who regularly sings in ibiza, can't remember her name though) belting out a few classic edm tunes then around an hour later the tables got packed away and the DJ started cranking the tunes :D

Music was pretty decent house/electro, some commercial, some more obscure tracks. Even though I'm not usually one for the more commercial stuff, I got into it and had a dance and had a fun night.

The venue is really well decorated and the staff are great, my only gripe is that when it turned into the club alot of young kids started flooding in, average age around 19 I reckon, and you could tell they were there to look cool and pick up. Kinda ruins the vibe a bit when its so obvious (had 3 separate guys try to chat up/dance with/kiss my partner while I was in the toilet ):whip: So after about 2 hours we'd had enough of the crowd and went elsewhere.

Anyway, check it out for yourself.
