My friend and I rented an apartment for a week... it was probably 1200 sq. feet, 2 bedrooms, nice kitchen and dining room, and right by the underground metro line in the Colosseum disctrict. It cost us about $80 per night, which is ing cheap and was a lot better than a hotel. |

i recommend getting one of those open top bus tours first thing. they help you get an idea of where everything is so you can then just wander around yourself. It's a nice city to just wander, the forum, vatican etc.
but by any measure it's expensive. |

Piazza Navona is a cool place, usually filled with artists displaying their work and painting. A bit touristy and pricey though.
Campo Fiori has more of a chill out atmosphere, and also seems to be kind of a night life place.
Pantheon is amazing, so is the colosseum.
If you're into archeology and history, take a bus to the appia antica (one of the first roads the romans ever built, a bit outside the center of town) and visit some of the catacombs. There are several. I saw the St. Sebastiano ones, very very cool.
But most of all really you should walk around a lot. The whole city is like one big museum, there's another crazy church or ancient roman building or statue around every corner. Also, like already mentioned, eat loads of gelato and pizza :p |

| I didn't think Rome was that expensive, just do the museums, galleries then get the hell out of town into the more regional areas and start guzzling your own bodyweight in cheap (but good!) vino. |

Rome seemed to have a rather disproportionate amount of restaurants that looked like absolute on the outside (not just old, like falling down), so you go in thinking you will save some money, but then you see the seating and arrangements and menu and suddenly you're in far too deep, haha.
//Get to Pompeii if you can - definitely one of the absolute coolest sites I have ever been to, and one criminally low on fellow tourists (that's a good thing). Also, this fresco still stood in one of the bath houses, last I was there:

I don't think Rome is an expensive city either. Ate a superb local joint on the Via Nazionale one evening. Starter, enormous Roman pizza, tiramisu and a glass of wine for 9 Euros or something ridiculous!
If you want to go to the Capella Sistina then don't try and access it via Piazza San Pietro, you need to go to the Musei Vaticani entrance. Buy tickets online if you can saves plenty of time. |

Rome kicks ing ass. Especially in the area around the Colosseum. We had an amazing suite in this little hotel a few blocks from it, http://www.lancelothotel.com/, could see it from our balcony.
Would love to go back to Rome soon. Amazing place :) |
