sometimes it's not about pre-existing connections, but a personal follow up on the application. if all you are doing to apply for jobs is submit a resume with an application, you are never going to get a job. you have to personally follow up with the hiring manager. and even that doesn't guaruntee anything.

This wasn't really a follow-up thing. You dropped it off and they thanked you and that was it. They also had to kinda beg kids to submit applications. Every day it was another email saying "reminder, reminder, etc." The application process was very informal.

Also you don't always have to follow up with the hiring manager. I applied for a summer internship at one of the biggest companies in America in my field, and I got an interview for it coming up, although I didn't follow up.

oh to be young again...he's not saying it is a rule but if you have the opportunity to follow up you do it. shows how much you care for one and makes it more difficult for someone to say no. i deal with students on occasion and the ones who write me and show they care i'm more apt to helping.

you always follow up, even though it is bull and fairly meaningless, you need to stop by and say

"I just wanted to let you know that I applied for the internship and I am really interested in it. I hope you consider my application."

...or some variation of that. it's all about tricking them emotionally. you should practice now so you are good at it when you try to get a real job.

a too good of a resume might just be too good to be true.

Remember that kids, when you lie with yours ;)

tricking them emotionally or smothering them with your desire. i abhor the game but i do it because i must as do most people.

So that means you are white and your friend is black?

Welcome to America.

I got two interviews to intern for a financial advisor. I called a few times and the last time, was told I'll get a call, which I never got. But the guy made it as if I had the job hands down.

a lot of the time it's about making a connection, if the opportunity presents itself. sounds like the opportunity didn't really present itself. It depends on the position, but you could also be overqualified. I don't know your field of study, but for example, you could be a damn good computer scientist when the job calls for a code monkey.

In any case, it happens. The way to overcome randomness is to just submit a massive number of applications. I've put in ~25 since late January, and doing more next week -- not surprisingly, the best response rate in terms of replies/interviews/offers has been from people I met in person. So, forget about that particular internship - happens. Submit lots of apps, and seize the opportunity to see recruiters face to face.
