OK, so let's just say I'm bored, it's cold outside, and checking in on TA everyday is making time progress at an incredibly slow pace.

So, here's the deal: After returning from the Ibiza closing parties last year, I was quite intrigued with this question. I've had a few conversations with people about it, and it's always interesting the points that are brought up. I even spent some free time writing up an in-depth analysis on the topic. Basically, I broke it up into as many categories as I could:

Location
Weather
Beaches
Transit
Accomodations
Food & Beverage
Community Dispostion
Venues
Events & Music
People & Vibe
Cost
Miscellaneous
Summary

Of course, as is the case with a lot of I do, I lost interest after a couple days and never finished it, leaving a few categories unfinished. Still, looking back on it now, it fills nearly five pages on Word, and the topic still interests me.

And so, for the purpose of discussion (and to kill some time), I pose the question to all of you:

All things considered, which is a better time:
The six or so days of WMC, or an equivalent amount of time spent in Ibiza??

So place your vote and discuss your reasoning. I can post excerpts on certain categories from my document, but it's probably too long to post the whole thing, and I'm not trying to bore anyone to death.

ibiza easy. simply because theres no miami bull to deal with. but i think im biased being from miami and all. also done wmc 7 times (8 this year) and did ibiza for the first time last august.

ibiza > wmc.

ibiza

its an island devoted to djs

I would sway a little more toward WMC..

Unfortunately there is always the cocky natives who don't welcome foreigners. Ibiza is a culturally diverse island, and many european countries (including the diverse partygoers in ibiza) dislike americans. But I can't lump that into one category, because the people who are welcoming and friendly  outnumber the hostile ones.

well, always good to be on your own soil.. but everyone loves a vacation from that though!

lol, there is definitely "Miami" bull to contend with in Ibiza. Door prices are whatever they feel like at the time, drink prices change like stock prices, over packing of the clubs and shady security. I will say the night makes the difference. I went to space on we love space sunday's and then on join our revolution tuesday and the security and everything was much different

Lol, not quite. The island is trying to get away from that and attract more of a family friendly environment and not the club type. In another thread on TA I got ripped on for not wanting to go and explore the island like I had no idea there was other things to do on Ibiza when in fact I did. I chose to go to Ibiza for the clubs, not for the culture. There is nothing wrong with going for either reason but the Island does not revolve around the DJ's as much as it did 3 years ago.

Your right, there are a lot of people who dont like americans. It is bull but very true.

I think WMC and Ibiza both have their own special place for me. I said I was only going to go to Ibiza this year but now I am going to WMC, hopefully I can get the funds together for Ibiza. If I had to chose I would say Ibiza just because it is not as "uppity" of an environment. Everyone who came there knows why they are there. No one needs to show off how much money they have, if your in Ibiza your not doing horrible financially.

Good stuff so far.
Pat, it's a breath of fresh air when someone can acknowledge their own bias. I've been to maimi more times than I can count, so I know a little of what you mean, but I'm sure your experience dwarfs that of someone who doesn't live there.

I had intended to post my entire analysis somewhere on the internet, like a blog or whatnot. Not only did I not finish it, but my final few entries were just plain lazy, so I gave up. I'd been meaning to re-visit it for some time, but free time and motivation quickly evaporated. Anyway, what I think I'll do is post a little of the unfinished product piece by piece leading up to WMC. Hopefully that keeps the discussion going.

Ibiza, simply because of the vibe, and the fact it's a whole season rather than just a week.

It's funny you posted this, my friend and I are planning on skipping the WMC next year in lue of Ibiza closing parties. We might come down just for the weekend in Miami next year instead of the full 6 days.

I think with the ammount of djs, parties, boat parties, etc. All happening in 6 days, Miami is unmatched. In Ibiza it is spread out over the session from May to October.
We are so hyped for next year that we have stopped watching wmc movies (mostly because we have seen them all) and have switched to Ibiza movies and research.

Any one have any good tips for some Ibiza virgins? We plan on getting there Monday morning and leaving the following Tuesday. We wanted to go to the opening parties but they seem spaced out compaired to the closings.

ibiza just didnt seem as stuck up to me like miami is. its not all about vip there. thats what i meant with my comment. and in terms of security, other than at the door i didnt notice it at all. i defiantly enjoyed not having any meat head space miami bouncers running me over or eyeing me up and down the whole time.

yea as cool as wmc is i dont think theres anyway any miami native will choose wmc over ibiza. its just that whole 'the grass is always greener on the otherside' mentality.
ravracer16
Well I just literally just bought my tickets/hotel for Ibiza. It will be my first time.

I love my Miami, and I love WMC, but somehow this year just seems to be a bit off. Not sure if it's Ultra taking all the big name acts and making them exclusive or something else.

And I probably won't hear any of these comments while I'm in Ibiza that I hear every year during WMC from the springbreakers, "how come they are not playing hip-hop", "they are having this thing called WMC" , "some DJ is playing, Dirty South, does he play hip-hop?"

She_Fitz
It is like comparing apples and organes. :)

I really like both but I don't see the point in comparing them since the only thing they have in common is DJs.
DPetey81
I don't believe it's apples and oranges at all. I think it's safe to say many of us visit Ibiza for most of the same reasons we go to WMC. Maybe red apples and green apples.:tongue2

So, here's the first category preceded by a small intro and disclaimer, which weren't important, except for the last sentence, which perfectly foreshadowed my laziness, haha...........

Obviously, these are only going to be my opinions and my observations. In no way am I an expert, or stating my conclusions as pure fact. It's just something I've been pondering and I'm curious as to how my thoughts will play out. I welcome any and all objective input. Hopefully, harsh criticism of my analysis will be witheld, but I know how the internet is, haha. Also, there is no need to inform me of how bored I must be or how I have too much time on my hands, because I am already very aware of such things. In any case, I realize that there will probably be holes in my reasoning throughout but, whatever, it's just for fun anyway. I just hope that one or two people enjoy the read. So, here it goes......................
Ibiza vs WMC
All right, so the premise of this is to look at the five or six days in Miami during Winter Music Conference, and compare it to an equivalent amount of time in Ibiza. I see the flaw in such a comparison, since the Miami side of things is a once-in-a-year special event, while Ibiza remains in a similar state for the entire summer. In no way could I simply compare Miami to Ibiza, because we all know that Ibiza would dominate such a discussion by fans of edm. So, to make things a little more fair, it's WMC versus any stretch during the summer on the island. I will break it down into different categories, comparing the two, and then picking which one I think comes out on top. At the end, I hope to have an opinion of which one wins the overall discussion. Or I just might grow weary of the entire idea and scrap it all together, in which case no one will even read this sentence, so................ um................ yeah:

Location
What does it's position on the globe offer, in terms of proximity?

Ibiza: A short flying distance from so many of the great cities on this planet. Since so many international flights connect in London, France, Barcelona, and Madrid, for a lot of people it's never more, figuratively speaking, than a hop and a skip away. Also, it's almost an equal, and not too horrible, distance away from the Americas and most of Asia. The fact that it is an island means that nobody can drive to it, and there are only a few locations with direct flights.

WMC: Miami's location at the very southeastern tip of the U.S. means a bit of a hike for most anybody. While a short flight from anything east of the mississippi, even west coast residents have to strap in for a little bit. Two fairly large international airports (FLL and MIA) mean not too many headaches (read:connections) coming from overseas, though not exactly a walk in the park, either. Driving is a painless option for anything as far north as maybe Atlanta.

Edge: Ibiza
- Really, one of the more centralized vaca spots on the planet (sorry Australia, but no place is close to you)
