State of NYTA Thread...

It seems some of you are upset that I asked Euphoria to post/move interview related threads in/to Music Discussion. I made a brief reference to this in a reply weeks ago:

Articles/Interviews for the most part should continue to be posted in Music Discussion. There are reasons for this, some which are logistical and some which are necessary to deter against promoter/promotion-related spam/thread bumping. |
...and now I'll expand on that.
In terms of logistical reasons:
If you take a look at the review threads posted in NYTA in the past little while you'll see the following:

As you can clearly see, many of the interview threads in NYTA had very few replies and a lower number of views.
In terms of promoter/promotion-related spam/thread bumping reasons:
When interviews are posted with simply a link to an external site you run into a grey area with regards to what is 'spam' and what is beneficial and can be allowed as a post. Couple that with a moderator that also does work for other sites and you run a high chance of running into an ugly situation. For example, posts like this (Ex. #1, #2, #3) would be closed if any random came in and posted that way. However, allowing a mod to post that way means they're playing by a different set of rules and that isn't fair.
The alternative? Posting the interviews in Music Discussion where the either the entire interview is posted OR a sufficient excerpt to give people an idea of the content and then providing a link to the source if they choose to get at the rest of it (Like this).
I spoke with Euphoria prior to her becoming mod and made her aware of the interviews in Music Discussion criteria and she agreed without objection.

I wanted to ask...is there a specific set of rules that apply to what can / cannot be posted in certain forums? |
In terms of 'official rules' - well - there really aren't any -- aside from no spam, don't harass other members and don't be a complete jackass. The reason for this is simple, the more complex a set of rules you enforce the greater chance you have of having to continually add/refine those rules because people will say "You didn't say I couldn't do that, so I did it." - etc. Now, the mods on TA mod with a light hand (for the most part) -- it takes a lot to get banned/suspended and censorship is a no-no --- the same goes for the deletion of threads (without merit (spam/harrassment/etc.)).
FYI, all the threads deleted/closed in NYTA in recent weeks were not done by me, and I've restored them so you don't think there is some mass conspiracy to keep you guys from speaking your minds.
Threads restored:

When writing something in a regional forum, I do it because I want to discuss it with those particular people in that forum/area. Otherwise what's the point of having a regional forum at all? I don't think it should be meant just to announce local events. NYTA used to be a community. Now it's just a party planner.
It seems to me that we no longer have the freedom of speech that we once had around here. I miss being able to discuss things other than events with you guys. I don't see anything wrong with being able to discuss sports, dj advice, or any other topic with you guys so long as it's not offensive.
Moving threads seems the same as censorship to me when the people I want to read them never will.
Z, this is not directed towards you. You're doing an awesome job of upholding the rules around here.
Swamper, would you please allow us to have a little more freedom around here? |
There is freedom. This is up to the moderator to decide if a thread should be moved - in TOTA I don't move anything of the sort. One of the reasons I put an event forum in here was to give you guys greater flexibility in discussing non-event related things -- to not have to worry about posts being continually bumped by promoters who wanted to push their guestlists, etc. When you said there wasn't enough discussion being done about events I listened and a poll was made and things were modified it to be like the West Coast forum (so that events could be mixed in with other threads within the main forum (with the option to turn it off)). It seems Euphoria may have confused my wanting interview threads in Music Discussion to also mean that all sports threads should be in Sports Discussion, etc. That is not the case.
Now, the possible solution:
I propose that you can post interview threads in NYTA under the condition that a sufficient excerpt, or the entire interview is posted along with a link to the source. You can/should also post it in Music Discussion because other people deserve to see it as well. If things enter the 'promoter/promotion-related spam/thread bumping' arena then we can deal with that on an individual basis.

This forum (especially this NYC board) has the least flaming/bitching of any forum I've ever seen on the internet, and I'm a bona-fide forum whore. |
Yes, and please understand that nothing on TA is done without considering the repercussions -- having a different set of rules for different forums/individuals leads to a mess and the flaming/bitching while present is also because we don't censor or prevent people from saying what's on their minds.
In case some of you are wondering, TA may have started in Toronto but NYTA holds a special place since NYC was the place where the first TA meetup (outside of Toronto) happened. (Thanks Pyro for posting that pic, I never saw that group shot!)
That said, I need to go get some sleep now, there's a hockey game to watch tomorrow. :D |

| whats the point of the replycount if 99% of them are of people trolling on music discussion section? |

| I Agree, the MD forum has turned into a disaster. |

Unless you're going compare the overall view/post count of all interviews posted on either forum, it doesn't really mean much. A sample is nice but it's not representative of the complete picture.
That comment I made that you quoted was a couple weeks ago before the mass thread-moving exodus began. |

| as always, swamper saves the day, nice job swamper and Z, maybea couple of mess ups here or there, but so what Z will fix whats shes done wrong, and hell the girl works full time, has a family, and volunteers to do this job, God bless her, yea she probably piised a couple of people off and made some mistakes, but she means well, trust me, good luck Z, and tahnks for all your hard work, many ofn teh EDM scene owe thanks (your work here, 360, and Cosmin's site) good points made by many in the forum, there were many good criticisms, hopefully they arent taking personally. It should never get personal, dirty, or inappropriate, but nothing wrong with trheads that say this is what needs to be fixed, or Im upset at TA because..... Overall I llike TA for all the other stuff, sports, restaurants, movies, technology threads etc, hope all is healed now and all you guys remain friends, nice to see the NYTAs together at Love or Roseland and supporting and making big our guys (ECO< Jollins, Brad, Tom etc), the DJS and producers around here always thank us for our support and vice versa we always speak up for them. "Cant we all just get along". |

I think the solution of being allowed to post interviews in NYTA and/or Music Discussion is a good idea. Some interviews will be better received by NYTA than by MD. I noticed the M.I.K.E. interview posted in NYTA had more responses than any on Swamper's list, which isn't a surprise because he is well loved in NYC. Also, the Stoneface and Terminal interview was more appropriate for NYTA because they made an appearance at Love last year.
But I think it's fine that Swamper wants us to post interviews both in NYTA and MD.
And I just want to mention that I disliked the response to Z's posting of interviews in MD. Some people told her to stfu and stop posting. That would never happen in NYTA. We love Z and her passion for music.
Thanks Swamper for developing a solution that can work for everybody. :) |

yea, i thought that was really disrespectful. seriously, the trolling of that section makes MD seem like a total joke. seems pointless to post anything in there worth a read if its just going to be ridiculed by a*******. |

ahh THIS is why I questioned why things were different HERE in NYTA. I always enjoyed a sense of community and free discussion in the Toronto threads, and thus our worries over why NYTA was not having the same rules here (recently). Thanks for sorting that out and bringing back the typical discussion threads :) |

well, I guess swamper really earned his keep with that thorough explanation of all that . But now we don't have anything to bitch, moan and complain about. so Im gonna complain about not having anything to complain about. WAaaaaaa
Z, I think you've done a fine job. I think that all interviews done by NY people or that want to be shared in the NY forum should most certainly go in the MD as well. I mean , you will get more hits. Even if it is people trolling. haters exist because they're pissed they aren't as good as the thing they're hating on.
SOoooo... threads we like stay. promotional spam goes.
time to find something new to debate, shouldnt be hard :D |
