Windows 7 file associations

Domesticated
I've googled the out of this and haven't found anything. I even downloaded a utility which is supposed to fix the problem and got nothing.

Windows 7 Starter Edition won't remember my associations, even when I repeatedly change them both in the 'Default Programs' menu in the control panel, as well as multiple 'open with...>always use this program' attempts.

With PDFs I prefer Foxit to Acrobat, and I actually uninstalled Acrobat. Now Windows doesn't know how to open PDFs unless I do it manually. The same is true with all my other programs and file types.

Any ideas?

Windows 7 Starter is the edition of Windows 7 that contains the least features. The Windows Aero theme is not included in this version, and it is not available in a 64-bit variant. The desktop wallpaper, and Visual Style (Windows 7 Basic) is also not user-changeable. This edition is available pre-installed on computers, especially netbooks, through system integrators or computer manufacturers.

What the ?!

Less features = lighter operating system.
Netbooks = low spec pieces of that need light operating system.

To be fair though, Domesticated has just begun a world trip. If he's travelling with a netbook, then I'd say it was a ing smart move on his part. Less stuff carried/less weight = win.

Oh yeah - totally. I just get a little tired of going out to jobs where people tell me that their new laptop runs really slow. I get there and they've got a netbook which was free with a mobile phone contract, and they expect it to play the latest games.

But for life on the move, and especially a world trip, there's no other way to go.

The only way to solve it, is to get Home Basic at the very least. A lot of things were disabled with starter. Including a lot of basic customisations. I could be wrong, but that was the impression I was under previously.
