| quote: | | The study, obtained by Fox News, found that Pashtun men commonly have sex with other men, admire other men physically, have sexual relationships with boys and shun women both socially and sexually -- yet they completely reject the label of "homosexual." The research was conducted as part of a longstanding effort to better understand Afghan culture and improve Western interaction with the local people. |
| quote: | | Apparently, according to the report, Pashtun men interpret the Islamic prohibition on homosexuality to mean they cannot "love" another man -- but that doesn't mean they can't use men for "sexual gratification." |

all jokes aside, doesn't this sound...ODD??? when i volunteered for a deployment to Afghanistan, i was speaking with our chaplain on base about it; and he was talking about how different culture over tthere and mentioned the thing about men having harems of dudes. and i was like, "did you said dudes?" and he's like, "yeah, older, richer men have harems of younger dudes to "service" them, and they don't think it's gay."
I know every culture is different, but man, this really struck me as odd. |

| Homosexuality is actually quite rare in Afghanistan, but it is a common joke that has turned to 'folklore.' Pashtuns in Afghanistan and even in America freely joke about homosexuality. So you end up with the idea/talk of homosexuality existing to a far greater extent than what actually exists. When there are a few homosexuals amongst a population of 25 Million or so, a big deal is made of it when the jokes are put aside. Buy more than anything, homosexuality is a joke Pashtuns use in their rhetoric, which has managed to turn into "omg Pashtuns teh gay" to the ignorant filled media who have not studied Afghan culture well enough, or would never care to report anything honest to begin with. I've asked people about this topic, and there is little raw evidence of homosexual activity in proportion to the amount the media is pushing the idea (and its obvious why they push this idea.) Besides Pashtuns loving to joke with eachother and the word "gay" often being used, Pashtuns also are very tribal/nepotic, and have brotherhood amongst eachother that other tribes/races dont within Afghanistan. So other tribes/races within Afghanistan often see this brotherhood as "homosexuality." In America, many ignorants see any sort of brotherhood or hanging out, amongst two men as two homosexuals hanging out. Its almost not a stereotype to most, its their logic. No wonder most guys and girls in America are so insecure. |
