How long are you here for? Got the JR pass? I recommend Kyushu and its prefectures.
Sooo many, things, I don't know where to begin, esepcially as you haven't even said where you're going. |
Haha yeah I know.
I will be in Tokyo, since that is where I am staying with my buddy who lives there.
I am reading on the JR pass, but it doesn't go into full detail on what it doesn't cover. Do you have more info on this?

I know ;) The point is that most American's drink it all at the same temperature all the time, not changing it at all depending on the type or the season or anything. |

The nationwide JR pass means you can use any shinkansen EXCEPT Nozomi trains (super-fast shink between Osaka and Tokyo), but it's only 15 mins faster. You can reserve seats for free on any other shinkansen, though, and you can go anywhere. Those of us that live in Japan can't get it 'cos you need to be on a tourist visa, but if you can get it, go for it. Note, in Tokyo, you can only use the JR pass on JR lines. Many of the subway lines are privatised, so just get a Suica card, and you'll be able to swipe through the barriers with ease without having to faff around buying tickets etc. However, the Yamonote line is a big loop that goes around Tokyo, and you cna use the JR pass on that.
If you're based in Tokyo, I recommend the tourist traps like Nikko etc. Yokohama / Kamakura / Odawara are pretty beautiful, but short of getting out into the real countryside, you're stuck for scenic options.
That said, there's tons to do in Tokyo. Depending on your dates, I'd recommend a night at Ageha nightclub in Shinkiba (Tokyo Bay area). Biggest night club in Asia, and one of the best lighting / sound systems in the world. If there's a big name in town, you'll need to get tickets in advance. http://www.ageha.com
There's always loads of museums, galleries, cafes etc. For nightviews, I'd recommennd the New York Bar at Park Hyatt hotel (Lost in Translation hotel). Nearest station is Tochomae on the Toei Oedo subway line. The drinks and food are as much as you're willing to pay, but minimum is about 3,000 yen. But it's worth it for the night views alone.
There's also Roppongi Hills, which is a relatively new developed area. Good restaurants and buildings you can go up and check out views from. My biggest advice though is to stay clear of Roppongi itself. It's just a meat-market for the military wanting to get laid. A bit of a hole, really.
Other places, Harajuku, Meiji Shrine, Emporer's palace, Asakusa shrine.
For a killer burger / steak, check out Gotham Grill in Ebisu! Expensive, but so darn good. Also, there are Sasebo burger joints in Tokyo. Google them. One of the best burgers you'll ever taste. I recommend to try ramen and sushi whilst you're here. Anywhere should be ok, but your friend will more than likely know some good spots.
I don't live in Tokyo (stuck up in the cold north!), but I swear I'm gonna live there at some point!
I would really advise putting aside some cash to go and stay in other parts of Japan though, seriously. |

LOL funny you mention Roppongi. My buddy already warned me about that place long ago after he moved there. Told me about the love motels and .
I know about Ageha and Womb. I want to check both out just for s and giggles. Don't really care if I go there on a big night or not. It isn't what I am there for anyway.
As for the JR pass, that is what I was trying to figure out. Thanks for that info.
Dates as to when I'll be there. 05/20-06/02. Get in at 1810 on the 20th and leave at 1845 on the 2nd. |

Well, it depends on what sort of stuff you'd like to see, Ben. I visited Japan in February and, if I could, I wouldn't have left the ski park.
But again, have fun snowboarding in California so I don't think our priorities are really alike :p |
