|| John Patterson ||

John Patterson began his foray into spinning records in 1996 while a student at the University of Illinois, DJing at several bars and small parties in college. A long time fan of 80s synth-pop and hip-hop, John quickly developed an ear and appreciation for different forms of electronic music. Although he did not have a strong understanding of electronic music at this point, John quickly discovered that he had found his passion.

Though exhilarated by his new love, even at this early point of his evolution, John often felt constrained and limited by the music he was expected to play in the limited forums available to him. It was only when he graduated from school, moved to Chicago, that all boundaries dissolved and he was able to truly refine his skills. He obtained his first pair of turntables in January of 1998, and his serious concentration on spinning wax began.

As he began his true ascension into DJing, John experimented with several styles of electronic music, constantly searching for the elements that would help him define a unique and personal sound. The DJs and producers who he now sites as major influences reflect the diversity of sounds that he explored in his formative DJ years. They include Brian Bretz, Mark Broom, Dave Clarke, Carl Cox, Karl Meier, Manish Miglani, Steve Rachmad, Ben Sims, Technasia, Cristian Varela and Claude Young.

Over the next two years, John continued to hone his skills, mostly privately for friends, and in closed quarters. During this period John began to gravitate largely towards only spinning techno. In the years 2000, John’s friend, George Moreira, extended his hand and asked John if he would like to be a resident DJ for Koncept, a Chicago-based promotions company that exclusively features techno music. This alliance afforded John greater opportunities to share his passion with techno fans and to perform at well-known Chicago clubs all over Chicago, as well as the opportunity to open for local and international talents such as Dave Angel, Dan Bell, Joey Beltram, Adam Beyer, Cajmere, Marco Carola, Mike Dearborn, Deetron, Roman Flugel, Richie Hawtin, Laurent Garnier, Richie Hawtin, Loco Dice, Derrick May, Michael Mayer, Jeff Mills, Billy Nasty, Gaetano Parisio, Mauro Picotto, DJ Rush, John Selway, Luke Slater, Christian Smith, Space DJz, Superpitcher and Danilo Vigorito.

Many promoters, such as George, have afforded John the opportunity to showcase his talents at their events around Chicago, Detroit and other various clubs around the country. If it was not for them, he would just be another bedroom DJ. He appreciates the hard work behind the scenes and tries to give back as best as he can to the promoters, along with clubbers alike. John has learned techno’s distinct nature has various meanings to different people. What he shares, along with everyone else, is a love of music. He tries to carry forth this love by sharing others’ music by showcasing his abilities as a DJ. He does this by moving effortlessly in and out of various musical styles, which is further accentuated by his seamless mixing style, focused on EQing, trickery and holding mixes for extended periods of time, sometimes using three turntables. His sound clearly reflects the broad spectrum of music to which he was exposed as he refined his DJing skills, and the bleeding edge of the larger, global techno movement.

Since the birth of his daughter in early 2009, John has taken a brief hiatus from DJing. He has had time to focus on his family, professional life and observe the Chicago techno scene from a distance. John sees the growing talent and class of Chicago DJs. He recognizes in order to be a part of this class, he can no longer sit back and watch from afar. With his new, 2010 residency at Smart Bar, John plans to keep his sound and performances progressing, adapting and changing in order to continue to make crowds move.

|| Hernan Sanchez ||

From the sounds of old salsa, cumbia and merengue records emanating from his parents’ home stereo as a child to the jacking raw beats of early Chicago house which provided the soundtrack to his teen years, Hernan’s early exposure to the musical output of Chicago’s diverse cultural communities awakened within him a lifelong passion for music and movement. Throughout Hernan’s time at university and beyond, Chicago’s influential music scene & quality record stores fed his voracious appetite for electronic sounds of all sorts- industrial, musique concrète, IDM, film soundtracks- to complement the beckoning throb of Chicago’s house dancefloors. However, it was upon his exposure to the work of artists such as Baby Ford & Ricardo Villalobos that Hernan discovered the sound which possessed the darker character he sought from other genres, but retained the enticing warmth & sexiness which he had previously found solely in deep house.

Over a decade later, this sound still resonates within him and drives Hernan to ignite floors across Chicago’s underground dance scene with his tasteful selection of current and classic productions. Hernan’s sets feature a focused attention to detail as he synthesizes engaging dialogues between tracks, all the while maintaining a sensual & propulsive energy to captivate the dancefloor. The percussive afro-caribbean pulse which held such presence throughout his formative years continues to serve as inspiration, flavored with Hernan’s touches of mood, a thick low-end, and the engaging polyrhythmic musical approach of his Latin background.

An established fixture of Chicago’s thriving techno/house scene both on the decks and on the dancefloor, Hernan continues to play at numerous underground events as well as at high-profile venues including Smartbar, Sonotheque, Lava, Vision, and Lumen. He has also played alongside a diverse range of leading talent, whose names include Akufen, Derek Plaslaiko, Dave Aju, among others.
