Dual layer dvd+/-R

Hi there,
I was wondering what is a good brand of DL dvd to burn with. I need something that is good because it's to make backup copies of important files..
I've been searching around the sites of stores around here...and it looks like to be $8 a piece....woah..when u can get 25 dvd for $8!!

| Verbatim, Tayo Yuden (sp), and Memorex are usually the best. TDK is hit or miss. Depends on the manufacturing facility. |

Yes, Taiyo Yuden is the manufacturer you're looking for. All reputable brands of CD or DVD media have Taiyo Yuden as a manufacturer (Maxell, TDK, Verbatim, Fuji Film, etc). but they also use other manufacturers as well.
What you need to look for is where the DVD's were made. Taiyo Yuden is a Japanese company so look for "Made in Japan" on the label somewhere (usually near the UPC). If it says Made in Taiwan or anywhere else, move to the next pack and try to find one that was made in Japan.
Taiyo Yuden also sells media under their own name, however, most retailers don't stock them as a brand.
If you're willing to buy online, than just buy Taiyo Yuden brand and skip the guess work.
Taiyo Yuden has the reputation of being one of, if not the, best manufacturers of recordable media, when it comes to data integrity. |

Not anymore, and they are for DL...they still make decent dvd's but when it comes to DL, it's Verbatim |

Really? When did this happen? I haven't read anything about Taiyo Yuden suddenly dropping off in Quality Control. Granted, I haven't used their Dual Layer DVD's often (or Dual Layer DVD's in general), I had no idea they would fall off when the technology would move on.
According to Verbatim's wiki ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verbatim_Corporation ) they're still using Taiyo Yuden for manufacturing (along with other brands). Though Verbatim also manufactures as well.
Good to know, I'll have to research them more before purchasing some DL DVD's. I suppose I blindly put that confidence into them, because of their track record. |

BTW, I was incorrect when I said Taiyo's make dual layers...they have never made a dual layer, but some chinese companies have used their name and tried to pass off their as Taiyo so beware. |

I am aware of the former CDfreaks. The fact that you said the top most quality maker all of a sudden took a tumble was what turned on the bull detector. Get your straight before posting in a computer related thread. |
